Job Title: Structural Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on the structural engineering analysis and design of bridge and transportation-related structures, with an emphasis on bridge structural design and inspection. You will serve as a lead designer on simple to moderately complex assignments, support site investigations and inspections, and collaborate closely with a small structural engineering team. The position offers the opportunity to work on a broad range of public and private sector projects within the New York City area, with a hybrid work structure and comprehensive benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural engineering analysis and design for bridge and transportation-related structures, including concrete, structural steel, and masonry components.
  • Lead the structural design of bridges and related transportation structures on simple to moderately complex assignments.
  • Assist in site investigations to document existing conditions, including detailed bridge inspections and condition assessments.
  • Perform site inspections for projects engineered by the office to verify conformance with design documents and engineering intent.
  • Complete and review structural design calculations to ensure accuracy, safety, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Assist in the preparation of detailed drawings and specifications using AutoCAD and other design tools.
  • Provide timely responses and practical engineering solutions to issues that arise during the construction administration phase of projects.
  • Coordinate structural engineering work products with in-house engineering staff and architects to ensure integrated, multidisciplinary project delivery.
  • Apply relevant code requirements and agency standards, including those of NYCDOT, NYSDOT, and NJDOT, to design and review activities.
  • Contribute to quality control and continuous improvement by reviewing peer work and incorporating lessons learned into future designs.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
  • Approximately 7+ years of experience in structural engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in structural engineering analysis and design for bridges and transportation-related structures.
  • Hands-on experience with concrete, structural steel, and masonry structures.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and structural design methodologies.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for the preparation of structural drawings and details.
  • Experience working with NYCDOT, NYSDOT, and NJDOT standards and procedures.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of structural code requirements.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Ability to serve as a lead designer on simple to moderately complex structural assignments.
  • Strong coordination skills to work effectively with other engineers and architects.
  • Ability to conduct site investigations and inspections and document existing conditions clearly.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is a plus.
  • NY or NJ Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
  • Experience with bridge inspection and documentation is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with a mix of public and private sector clients.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports, specifications, and responding to construction inquiries.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and prioritize tasks in a project-based environment.
  • Interest in a broad range of structural engineering work beyond bridges, including transportation-related structures.

Work Environment

The role follows a hybrid work structure, combining office-based work with time spent in the field for site investigations, bridge inspections, and construction-phase site visits. You will use tools such as AutoCAD and standard structural analysis software in a professional office setting, coordinating with in-house engineering staff and architects. The position involves periodic travel between project sites, with travel reimbursement provided for site-to-site visits.
