Description

Position Summary Thompson Engineering is seeking a Junior to Mid-Level Structural Designer with AutoCad and REVIT experience who is interested in building their technical skills and growing within a collaborative engineering environment.The Structural Designer will assist with the development of structural plans, details, and construction documents for a variety of projects, including, but not limited to, bridges, transportation structures, retaining walls, buildings, and waterfront structures. The successful candidate will work closely with structural engineers and other design professionals to translate engineering concepts and design criteria into accurate, constructible drawings.Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop and revise structural drawings and construction documents using AutoCAD and/or REVITAssist with development of structural plans, elevations, sections, details, and related design documentationSupport the design and detailing of bridges, retaining walls, transportation structures, and other infrastructureTranslate engineering concepts, sketches, calculations, and markups into accurate design drawingsWork closely with structural engineers and other project team members to support design developmentLearn and apply applicable DOT standards, AASHTO guidelines, building codes, and other project specific requirementsPerform quality control reviews of drawings and design documents prepared by othersMaintain organized project files and follow established CAD and corporate design standardsDevelop proficiency in Microstation and other Bentley software as applicable in addition to AutoCAD and REVITSupport project schedules, deadlines, and coordination with internal teamsParticipate in training and professional development to expand structural design capabilitiesPerform other duties as assigned to support project and department needs including site visits and field inspectionsQualificationsAssociate's degree or technical certification in CAD, Drafting, or related field (or equivalent experience)0–8+ years of structural design or drafting experienceExperience with AutoCAD requiredExperience with REVIT preferredDemonstrated experience supporting bridge, roadway, or transportation infrastructure projectsMicroStation experience is a plusFamiliarity with structural drawings, construction documents, or engineering plans preferredAbility to interpret engineering sketches, markups, specifications, and design criteriaStrong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate workAbility to learn new software, technical standards, and design processesStrong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skillsAbility to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team Preferred QualificationsFamiliarity with structural detailing for bridges, retaining walls, transportation structures, or other infrastructureExperience with additional Bentley tools (e.g., Microtation, OpenBridge Modeler, ProjectWise)Familiarity with DOT standards and AASHTO guidelinesExperience preparing structural construction documentsTechnical degree or coursework in civil/structural engineering technology, drafting, or a related disciplineInterest in developing long-term career in structural designWhy Join Thompson Engineering?Employee-owned company (ESOP) - your work directly contributes to shared successOpportunity to work on impactful transportation and infrastructure projects across the Gulf CoastCollaborative environment with strong technical teamsOpportunities for professional growth and leadership developmentPhysical Requirements & Work EnvironmentPrimarily office-based with occasional field visits as neededAbility to sit for extended periods and work at a computerAbout Thompson EngineeringFounded in 1953, Thompson Engineering provides quality assurance and professional services for construction projects supporting industrial, infrastructure, and community development.
