Job Overview:

The NYRA Steward Assistant is a representative of the NYRA Steward and must hold themselves to the highest level of Integrity. The NYRA Stewards assistant is responsible for maintaining files and records in the Stewards Office, including New York State Suspensions and Penalty book, Steward Inquiries, Jockey suspensions, HISA/ HIWU suspensions. Responsible for creating and maintaining NYRA Stewards reports and HISA reports and rulings. Answers phone and directs calls to appropriate parties. Monitors daily racing forms and Clockers published works, records findings for Stewards list daily. Interacts with all racing participants as necessary on race day to gather information as needed by NYRA Steward. Conducts Breathalyzer testing for jockeys every race day.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains files and records in the Stewards Office, including NY State Suspensions and Penalty book, Steward Inquiries, Jockey Suspensions, HISA/ HIWU Medications Suspensions, NYRA House Rule Violations.
  • Maintains and creates all HISA daily reports/fines and distributes to appropriate personnel.
  • Collect any Fines due to NYRA and delivery to appropriate personnel
  • Answers phone and directs callers to the appropriate Steward for race day scratches.
  • Assist the NYRA Steward with daily scratches and communicates with Trainers and Veterinarians.
  • Records information from the veterinarian email and distribute it to all NYRA Veterinarians and Stewards.
  • Type Stewards' notes from hearings and financial obligation letters and responds to customer inquiries via phone and email.
  • Handles calls from patrons regarding any Stewards inquiries.
  • Ensures NYRA Steward has a record of post time scratches and daily changes.
  • Monitors daily racing forms and Clockers' published works; Records eased and poor-performance horses and Clockers' published work for Stewards' list.
  • Maintains and orders supplies for the office.
  • Verifies the validity of horse transfers and reports them appropriately.
  • Logs and maintains film theater room reservations.
  • Prepares and distributes Horse ID monthly reports and Horse ID annual summary report.
  • Responsible for several contracts that must be renewed either yearly or biyearly (American Teletimer, United Puett, Triple Star, Morrisville, Stericycle and TRPB).
  • Type's permission to run letters for horses claimed looking to run in a Stake at another track once approved by all Stewards
  • Schedule shockwave appointments for Private Practice Veterinarians and arrange times with security.
  • Work with the Receivable Accounts Coordinator and assure that all bounced checks get reported to NYRA Steward and the appropriate action is taken.
  • Creates and maintains a daily NYRA Stewards report reflecting all race day incidents that occur during the running of the race.
  • Interacts with racing participants during the race day to gather information as needed for the NYRA Steward or to deliver documents issued from the NYRA Stewards office.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education (minimum): High School diploma or GED. Secretarial school or coursework is helpful.
  • Experience: 2 years of previous administrative experience. Experience in the horseracing industry preferred.
  • Other (certifications)

Knowledge Required:

  • Typing skills and grammar.
  • Proficient in Microsoft word, excel and teams.
  • Must be proficient at composing emails and letters.
  • Customer service skills.
  • General horse racing knowledge is preferred.

Summary of Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

The position is primarily sedentary in nature and does not require any special physical demands. Work is performed in an office environment and involves prolonged sitting, typing, and viewing a computer screen.

Pay Range / Salary: $21.32 - $28.79/ hr
