Position Summary
Incumbents in this position are responsible for the decontamination, inspection, preparation, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment in accordance with department policies, infection control standards, and established safety procedures.
Core Responsibilities and Duties
1. Information Management
- Locate, effectively use, and provide key patient-care-related information while demonstrating an understanding of potential clinical implications.
- Exercise sound judgment that supports the safe and effective delivery of patient care and enhances the overall patient experience.
- Respond positively and readily to changing priorities and work assignments.
2. Accurate and Efficient Work
- Wash, disinfect, decontaminate, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment according to established policies and procedures.
- Sort, reassemble, wrap, and place instruments in appropriate containers based on instrument cards and sterilization requirements.
- Update instrument sets and sterilization methods as needed.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, integrity, and functionality before assembly into containers, wraps, or peel pouches.
- Maintain accurate documentation of instrument sterilization processes.
- Handle instruments, equipment, and supplies in a manner that preserves their sterility and integrity.
- Perform technical duties efficiently to optimize processes, materials, and time management.
- Monitor supply usage, anticipate weekly needs, and request supplies for the sterile processing area as necessary.
- Maintain the decontamination and instrument assembly areas in a clean, orderly, and organized condition.
3. Technology and Equipment Competency
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of all assigned equipment, instruments, and technology.
- Adapt to new technologies and learning requirements as they are introduced.
- Maintain competency in the safe and effective operation of sterile processing equipment and instrumentation.
