Position Summary

The Steel Project Manager I provides overall direction and leadership for an entire project or a portion of a larger, more complex commercial construction project in collaboration with the Project Superintendent. This role is responsible for managing all phases of project execution, ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards while building strong relationships with clients, design teams, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and promote a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with company and industry safety standards.

Manage project startup and preconstruction activities, including quantity takeoffs, trade coordination, scope development, bid package preparation, scheduling, and subcontractor solicitation.

Lead subcontractor buyout activities, including bid evaluation, scope verification, pricing analysis, and subcontract execution.

Manage submittal schedules, review shop drawings and material samples, and coordinate approvals with architects and engineers.

Coordinate procurement of structural steel materials and equipment with purchasing and logistics teams.

Evaluate subcontractor qualifications, bonding requirements, and project risks throughout the construction lifecycle.

Coordinate project activities among owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel.

Manage Requests for Information (RFIs), change orders, pricing reviews, and owner approvals.

Lead Owner-Architect-Contractor (OAC) meetings, project progress meetings, and internal project reviews.

Manage monthly owner billings and subcontractor payment applications.

Develop, update, and maintain detailed project schedules in collaboration with the Project Superintendent.

Monitor project progress and proactively address schedule impacts related to weather, labor, scope changes, or material availability.

Maintain comprehensive project documentation, including budgets, schedules, contracts, quality records, and safety documentation.

Prepare project status reports, cost analyses, profitability forecasts, and financial projections.

Monitor project budgets and identify cost variances while implementing corrective actions.

Lead project closeout activities, including punch lists, warranties, financial reconciliation, and final documentation.

Coordinate with legal and risk management teams as required.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.

Minimum of 5 years of commercial construction project management experience.

Experience working for a General Contractor (GC).

Required

Hands-on experience managing self-perform structural steel projects on commercial construction projects.

Experience overseeing steel fabrication, erection, and coordination activities is highly preferred.

Valid and unrestricted driver's license.

Willingness to travel occasionally or relocate based on project requirements.

Required Skills

Strong understanding of commercial construction methods and structural steel operations.

Experience managing budgets, project schedules, procurement, subcontractors, and client relationships.

Knowledge of structural steel sequencing, coordination, and installation processes.

Strong experience with cost control, forecasting, contract administration, and change management.

Excellent leadership, communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Advanced proficiency with construction management, project accounting, and scheduling software.

Knowledge of Lean Construction principles and continuous improvement practices.

Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to build collaborative relationships with clients, subcontractors, design professionals, and internal teams.

Work Environment

Primarily based in Austin, Texas, with work performed in both office and active construction site environments.

Occasional travel or temporary relocation may be required.

Flexibility to work extended or non-traditional hours based on project schedules.

Exposure to varying weather conditions and construction site environments.

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

Frequent sitting and computer work, with occasional standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
