As the
State and Local Tax – Income & Franchise Manager, you will lead multiple client engagements and provide comprehensive state and local income/franchise tax planning, consulting, and compliance services. This role will manage client service teams, oversee complex multi-state tax projects, provide technical tax guidance, mentor staff, and serve as a trusted business advisor to clients.
The ideal candidate will have
6+ years of progressive state income tax compliance and/or tax consulting experience, a
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, and an
active CPA license, JD with an active law license in good standing, or Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation.
Candidates from
Top 10 CPA firms, excluding CBIZ, are preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage, direct, and monitor multiple client service teams across various engagements.
- Plan, execute, direct, and complete tax projects across a variety of industries.
- Provide State and Local Tax planning, consulting, and compliance expertise.
- Manage engagement budgets, project tasks, timelines, and deliverables.
- Manage, develop, train, and mentor tax staff.
- Assess staff performance during engagement and year-end reviews.
- Oversee State and Local Tax return preparation and review.
- Conduct tax research and prepare technical memorandums and client correspondence.
- Counsel clients regarding state tax audits and audit defense.
- Manage multidisciplinary, multi-state tax reviews involving:
- Income tax
- Franchise tax
- Sales and use tax
- Payroll tax
- Ad valorem tax
- Other state and local taxes
- Identify optimal filing options, exemptions, credits, incentives, and corporate structures to reduce client tax burdens.
- Advise clients on business and process improvement opportunities.
- Serve as a business advisor and trusted tax resource to clients.
- Support business development activities, including opportunity identification, proposal development, and client pursuit activities.
- Manage multiple project responsibilities simultaneously while maintaining quality and deadlines.
- Collaborate with internal teams and clients to ensure successful engagement delivery.
- Travel as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
- 6+ years of progressive tax compliance and/or tax consulting experience.
- Active CPA license, OR JD with active law license in good standing, OR Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation.
- Strong experience in State and Local Tax / Income and Franchise Tax.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
- Strong project and engagement management skills.
- Strong computer skills.
- Ability to lead, develop, train, and mentor staff.
- Ability to travel as needed.
