The Tesla Energy Device Software team is hiring a Staff Software Engineer and Team Lead to build firmware and device software for Wall Connector and Tesla s broader AC charging products.
Wall Connector is not only installed in millions of homes and parking spaces, charging tens of millions of cars. It's also a key part of Powershare, Tesla s bidirectional vehicle (V2X) strategy, enabling home backup and vehicle grid participation at terawatt-hour scale. You ll lead embedded component design, device-level controls, metering compliance, multi-device site coordination, third-party system integration, and global product readiness including regional compliance and certifiable software paths for new markets.
Our products also face the challenges of any IoT system: installation, configuration, field diagnostics, and health monitoring. They need to be commissioned and registered, run autonomously, respond to commands, generate telemetry, and receive over-the-air updates. Our stack spans bare-metal and RTOS firmware, embedded Linux, local and cloud protocols, and validation tooling. You'll bring pragmatism, comfort diving into unfamiliar code and standards, willingness to collaborate across hardware, validation, compliance, product, and partner teams, ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and strong engineering leadership to the table.
Design, architect, and deliver AC charging device software across real-time embedded and embedded Linux environments
Own and contribute to core product areas such as metering, comms stacks, safety-related behaviors, charging state machines, diagnostics, and validation
Collaborate with Product, Hardware, System Integration, Compliance, and Service to turn requirements (including regional compliance) into hardware and software designs, API contracts, tests, and shippable firmware
Define system architecture, automated testing strategy, and engineering practices that raise product reliability, developer productivity, and release confidence
Plan, execute, and delegate roadmap initiatives to meet product and business requirements on time with high quality, scalable software solutions
5 years' experience building, debugging, and shipping software for embedded products
Experience leading technical teams, mentoring engineers, and driving strategic planning
Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
Proficiency in real-time embedded systems or embedded Linux, embedded systems languages (C, C++, Rust), and debugging hardware
Exposure to EV charging, safety standards, global/market compliance, multi-device site controls, or third-party protocol integration is a plus
