About the Opportunity
Commure is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to design and build the financial systems powering its Revenue Cycle Management platform. This role combines hands-on backend engineering with architecture ownership, technical direction, and mentorship.
You will own critical accounts and ledgering capabilities that help healthcare providers accurately track payments, reconcile transactions, and maintain reliable financial records.
Prior experience building a double-entry payment ledger from the ground up is essential.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build, and operate a double-entry payment ledger using immutable events, append-only entries, and derived balances.
Define clear accounting models for payer balances, patient balances, adjustments, and cash.
Own financial workflows spanning payment posting, adjustments, patient accounts, bank reconciliation, and accounts receivable reporting.
Build idempotent processing pipelines with clear reversal semantics and safeguards against duplicate or incorrect transactions.
Reconcile billed charges, insurance remittances, bank deposits, and financial reports; identify and resolve discrepancies.
Develop scalable backend services and APIs using Python and FastAPI.
Operate large PostgreSQL datasets, including query optimization, safe migrations, backfills, and data integrity controls.
Establish monitoring, logging, tracing, dashboards, alerting, and service-level objectives for critical financial systems.
Lead architecture reviews, guide technical decisions, and mentor engineers.
Partner with product, operations, and engineering teams to deliver initiatives from design through production support.
Required Qualifications
8+ years of backend software engineering experience, including 3+ years working with accounts, ledgering, or related financial systems.
Demonstrated experience building a production double-entry payment ledger from zero to one.
Strong understanding of double-entry accounting, immutable and append-only ledgers, idempotency, reconciliation, and reversal semantics.
Strong hands-on Python backend engineering skills.
Expertise in SQL and relational databases, including PostgreSQL, ACID transactions, query performance, and data integrity.
Experience designing distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and REST APIs.
Experience shipping and operating systems where financial accuracy and reliability are critical.
Demonstrated Staff-level ownership of complex initiatives spanning multiple systems and teams.
Proven ability to mentor engineers and influence technical direction.
Strong communication skills and comfort working in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with FastAPI.
Experience building payments, billing, accounting, or reconciliation products at a high-growth fintech or technology company.
Familiarity with healthcare revenue cycle management, patient accounting, insurance remittance formats such as 835/ERA, or accounts receivable aging.
Experience with bank APIs, BAI2 files, or change data capture (CDC).
Additional backend development experience in Go or Java.
Core Technical Skills
Python • FastAPI • PostgreSQL • SQL • Double-Entry Accounting • Payment Ledgers • Financial Reconciliation • Idempotent Processing • Event-Driven Architecture • REST APIs • Distributed Systems • Observability • System Design • Technical Leadership
Team and Impact
Join an RCM engineering team of six, expanding to seven with this hire, and report to the Senior Director of Engineering for RCM. You will help shape the technical roadmap, establish engineering best practices, and build financial infrastructure with a direct impact on healthcare operations.
Compensation and Benefits
Annual base salary of $250,000–$300,000.
Equity through incentive stock options (ISOs), with a four-year vesting schedule.
Potential competitive sign-on bonus.
Hybrid work arrangement at one of the listed California locations.
Interview Process
The process includes an initial recruiting conversation, hiring manager interview, technical and system design assessments, cross-functional discussions, and a final leadership conversation. Sessions may be grouped into approximately three to four rounds.
