Responsibilities:
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Staff R&D Engineer to join our team. This role will focus on identifying and advancing next-generation opportunities in structural heart and heart failure therapies through early-stage concept development, technical feasibility, and cross-functional collaboration.
The ideal candidate combines deep engineering expertise with strong market awareness and customer-centric thinking. This individual will play a key role in researching unmet clinical needs, evaluating competitive technologies, conducting Voice of Customer (VOC) activities, and translating insights into innovative cardiovascular device concepts.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead early-stage research and development activities for innovative cardiovascular medical devices.
- Identify and evaluate front-end innovation opportunities through assessment of: Competitive landscape, emerging technologies, clinical trends, physician and patient unmet needs.
- Collaborate closely with Marketing and Clinical teams to conduct VOC activities and define product opportunity spaces.
- Drive concept generation, feasibility assessments, and early prototyping efforts for cardiovascular device platforms.
- Support development of innovation strategies aligned with business and clinical priorities.
- Translate user insights and technical findings into actionable product concepts and development plans.
- Work cross-functionally with engineering, clinical, regulatory, quality, and commercial teams throughout the innovation process.
- Maintain awareness of evolving technologies, intellectual property, and market dynamics within cardiovascular therapies.
- Contribute technical expertise to portfolio planning, risk assessments, and innovation roadmaps.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- Requires Engineering Bachelors Degree and 8+ years of relevant experience or Master's Degree and 6+ years of experience
- Minimum of 8+ years of relevant medical device R&D experience, including significant experience in early-stage product development.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven experience in the early design and development of cardiovascular devices.
- Demonstrated ability to research and assess front-end innovation opportunities, including evaluation of competitive landscapes and unmet clinical needs; including recommendations for technology acquisition.
- Experience collaborating effectively with Marketing teams to conduct VOC research and evaluate innovation opportunities.
- Strong technical problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while driving alignment across cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (MS) in Biomedical Engineering or related discipline.
- Prior experience with structural heart and/or heart failure devices strongly preferred.
- Experience with concept development, prototyping, and translational research methodologies.
- Familiarity with physician engagement, human factors considerations, and clinical workflow analysis.
