Position Summary

The Adult Outpatient Chemotherapy Infusion Registered Nurse (RN) provides safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care to adult patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biologic therapies, blood products, and other infusion treatments in an outpatient oncology setting. The RN is responsible for comprehensive patient assessment, treatment administration, symptom management, patient education, care coordination, and monitoring for treatment-related complications.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive nursing assessments before, during, and after chemotherapy and infusion treatments.

• Review laboratory results, treatment plans, medication orders, allergies, and patient clinical status prior to treatment.

• Safely administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, biologic agents, supportive medications, and other prescribed infusions according to established protocols.

• Verify chemotherapy orders and medications according to institutional safety standards and applicable oncology guidelines.

• Establish and maintain peripheral IV access and assess implanted ports, central venous catheters, and other vascular access devices.

• Monitor patients closely for infusion reactions, hypersensitivity reactions, extravasation, adverse drug effects, and other treatment-related complications.

• Recognize changes in patient condition and initiate appropriate interventions, including emergency response when indicated.

• Provide management and education regarding common treatment-related symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, pain, neuropathy, mucositis, diarrhea, constipation, and myelosuppression.

• Educate patients and caregivers regarding treatment plans, medications, expected side effects, infection prevention, symptom management, and when to contact the oncology care team.

• Administer premedications, hydration, electrolyte replacement, growth factors, and other supportive therapies as ordered.

• Provide transfusion-related care and monitoring when applicable.

• Coordinate care with oncologists, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, laboratory personnel, and other members of the multidisciplinary oncology team.

• Document assessments, treatments, patient responses, education, and interventions accurately in the electronic medical record.

• Maintain compliance with chemotherapy handling, hazardous-drug precautions, infection prevention, medication safety, and institutional policies.

• Participate in quality improvement, patient-safety initiatives, continuing education, and competency validation.

• Serve as a patient advocate while maintaining privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.

Position Qualification:

• Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.

• Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree (preferred).

• Current BLS certification.

• Oncology or chemotherapy/biotherapy administration certification or completion of an approved chemotherapy/biotherapy training program, as required.

• Previous oncology, infusion, acute-care, or ambulatory nursing experience preferred.

• ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate or equivalent oncology education preferred.
