UFG is currently hiring for a Sr. Tax Accountant who will be responsible for the accurate accounting, reporting, and analysis of United Fire Group's (UFG) federal and state income taxes. This role ensures that all transactions are properly reported in accordance with federal and state income tax regulations, as well as GAAP and statutory accounting principles, while maintaining data integrity across subledger and financial reporting systems.

Working closely with Finance leadership, the Senior Tax Accountant provides technical support for quarterly tax provisions, federal and state income tax returns, and the quarter-end financial close process, ensuring accurate and timely reporting across multiple company entities. This individual also assists in implementing process improvements, strengthening internal controls, and supporting both external and internal audit requests. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical accounting skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a complex insurance environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Tax Accounting & Reporting

  • Assist with preparation and/or review of quarterly tax provisions and the federal and state income tax returns
  • Perform and oversee quarter-end income tax activities, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis for multiple company entities
  • Proactively identify and resolve tax regulatory and accounting issues
  • Research and draft technical memos to ensure alignment with tax regulations and accounting principles
  • Maintain current knowledge of tax laws, insurance industry regulations, and best practices
  • Analyze financial information and prepare detailed reports to support management decision-making

Governance & Controls

  • Maintain SOX-compliant documentation, ensuring adherence to company policies and internal control requirements
  • Assist with audit requests, including internal controls and testing evidence

Collaboration & Process Improvement

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at optimizing processes, standardizing reporting, and automating data flow
  • Mentor other team members by sharing knowledge and modeling best practices related to tax accounting and financial reporting
  • Support system enhancements and testing related to accounting or financial reporting applications
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations and IT to support finance transformation initiatives designed to modernize systems and standardize financial processes
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the finance department and company goals

Job Specifications:

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in accounting
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or progress toward certification preferred
  • Masters degree in accounting or MBA preferred

Experience:

  • 5 years of income tax reporting or insurance accounting experience
  • Prior experience within property and casualty insurance, preferred
  • Experience with income tax provisions and federal and state income tax returns required

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Strong understanding of income tax regulations, including GAAP and statutory income tax accounting principles
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to accuracy and detail
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, complex formulas)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across cross-functional teams
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a dynamic environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting
  • Process improvement mindset with ability to identify and implement efficiency enhancements
  • Critical thinking skills and sound professional judgment

Pay Transparency Statement:

UFG Insurance is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The base salary range for this position is $71,598 - $94,396 annually, which represents the typical range for new hires in this role. Individual pay within this range will be determined based on a variety of factors, including relevant experience, education, certifications, skills, internal equity, geography and market data.
