Sr Systems Engineer

Role Overview

This organization is seeking a high-level Unix/Linux System Administrator to join the IoT team. The successful candidate will administer, operate, and automate Linux-based server and edge computing environments, specifically focusing on Azure IoT Edge devices at scale across approximately 11,000 virtual machines. This role involves day-to-day system administration, patching, automation, container operations, and production-grade observability across on-premises and cloud-based disaster recovery systems. The position requires a hands-on operator who is comfortable scripting, troubleshooting, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and support Azure IoT Edge devices and modules (edgeAgent/edgeHub) in production, including provisioning, patching, updates, and troubleshooting.
  • Plan and execute quarterly Azure IoT Edge upgrade and maintenance activities, upgrading the IoT Edge runtime across the fleet within scheduled maintenance windows with minimal operational disruption.
  • Perform L3-level Linux system administration, including user/access management, kernel and OS-level troubleshooting, performance/capacity tuning, and root-cause analysis.
  • Operate and maintain the observability stack, utilizing OpenObserve for logs and Prometheus/Grafana for metrics and dashboards across edge, application, and cloud systems.
  • Support disaster recovery execution between primary edge/on-premise infrastructure and cloud-based disaster recovery environments, including running failover/failback procedures.
  • Build, maintain, and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines for application and infrastructure deployment.
  • Write and maintain automation scripts and playbooks using Ansible, Puppet, Chef, shell, or Python to reduce manual operational work.
  • Respond to alerts, triage incidents, and escalate according to established runbook procedures.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including security, networking, and application teams, on daily operational issues and change requests.

Required Qualifications

Education: A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field is preferred, or equivalent practical hands-on experience.

Experience: Ten or more years of hands-on experience as a Unix/Linux System Administrator, with a documented track record of operating production Linux systems, containers, and CI/CD-driven automation workflows at scale.

Technical Skills: Advanced L3-level administration experience on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Ubuntu, including troubleshooting across kernel, filesystem, storage, and networking. Proficiency in Azure IoT Edge runtime, Docker containers, CI/CD pipelines, OpenObserve, Prometheus, and Grafana is required. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in shell scripting and at least one general-purpose language such as Python, Java, C#, or Go.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience migrating from legacy monitoring tools to modern observability stacks.
  • Exposure to MQTT broker administration in high-throughput IoT environments.
  • Experience administering NGINX configuration and tuning.
  • Familiarity with certificate lifecycle management, including issuance, rotation, and expiry monitoring.
  • Knowledge of edge-computing constraints in distributed or remote environments.
