Sr. SAN/Storage Backup Engineer

Location: Omaha, Nebraska (Onsite)

Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior Storage and Backup Engineer to serve as a hands-on technical lead within the infrastructure organization. This person will own day-to-day storage and backup engineering, help design and build enterprise solutions, lead modernization and migration efforts, and mentor other engineers on the team. This is not a people-management position or an architecture-only role. The ideal candidate is a senior individual contributor who can provide technical direction while remaining actively involved in implementation, troubleshooting, migrations, and operational support.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, implement, and support enterprise storage and backup solutions.
• Serve as a hands-on technical lead and go-to resource for complex storage and backup issues.
• Establish engineering standards, technical best practices, and operational procedures.
• Lead storage migrations, platform consolidations, and modernization initiatives.
• Support the organization's movement toward a more centralized enterprise object-storage strategy.
• Monitor storage capacity, availability, performance, resiliency, and recoverability.
• Troubleshoot complex storage, SAN, backup, replication, and recovery issues.
• Partner with infrastructure, application, database, cloud, and security teams.
• Mentor engineers and help strengthen the team's technical capabilities.
• Evaluate new technologies and recommend improvements to the storage and backup environment.
• Participate in a low-volume on-call rotation.

Required Qualifications

• Approximately 8 or more years of experience in enterprise storage and backup engineering.
• Strong hands-on experience designing, implementing, and supporting enterprise storage solutions.
• Experience supporting SAN, NAS, object-storage, and backup technologies.
• Experience leading storage or backup migrations and platform consolidations.
• Strong understanding of storage architecture, SAN fabrics, data protection, replication, disaster recovery, and performance management.
• Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership or mentoring engineers as a senior individual contributor.
• Ability to diagnose complex infrastructure problems and remain involved through resolution.
• Ability to learn and adapt to unfamiliar storage and backup platforms.
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Willingness to work primarily onsite and participate in a light on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Hitachi enterprise storage platforms.
• Experience with Cisco Fibre Channel or comparable SAN fabric technologies.
• Experience with Commvault or a comparable enterprise backup platform.
• Experience with enterprise object-storage solutions.
• Experience supporting cyber-recovery, immutable backup, or advanced disaster-recovery capabilities.
• Experience with storage automation, scripting, or infrastructure as code.
• Experience leading cost-reduction or data-center modernization initiatives.

• They are still technically hands-on and do not operate only at the architecture level.
• They can lead through technical credibility rather than formal authority.
• They have completed large storage or backup migrations.
• They can mentor a developing engineering team.
• They understand storage and backup fundamentals well enough to transfer their knowledge across different vendor platforms.

Work Environment

This position currently follows a hybrid schedule with four days onsite and one day remote per week. Candidates should be comfortable working collaboratively in an office environment, with the understanding that onsite expectations may change in the future.
