    Description

    R.J. Corman Railroad Group is currently seeking a Senior Network Engineer to join our team in Nicholasville, KY.

    Responsibilities:

    • Support and maintain corporate and field network environments across railroad offices, terminals, shops, yards, and remote locations supporting rail operations.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity issues impacting operational systems, dispatching, safety, and business functions.
    • Serve as an escalation point for complex network incidents and outages.
    • Administer and support Cisco ISE for user and device authentication, wired and wireless access control, and integration with Active Directory and security policies.
    • Troubleshoot access issues affecting office staff, field devices, and railroad operational systems.
    • Manage Cisco Umbrella DNS-layer security policies and support remote users and locations.
    • Support and coordinate fiber and structured cabling infrastructure, including MDF/IDF closets, patch panels, switches, cabling documentation, and labeling.
    • Coordinate with contractors and vendors for fiber installations, repairs, and testing.
    • Support Azure networking components, including site-to-site VPNs and secure connectivity between on-premises locations and Azure.
    • Deploy, configure, and support Cradlepoint LTE/5G devices for remote sites, temporary locations, and backup connectivity.
    • Monitor connectivity, performance, and reliability of cellular network solutions.
    • Manage vendor relationships, Cisco SmartNet support cases, hardware replacements, and support escalations.
    • Assist with hardware lifecycle planning and refresh coordination.
    • Maintain network documentation, including network diagrams, IP address tracking, site connectivity details, and troubleshooting procedures.
    • Follow and contribute to change management practices.
    • Collaborate with IT Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Field Operations, railroad leadership, and site contacts.
    • Mentor junior team members and provide guidance on network best practices.
    • Communicate clearly during outages or changes impacting railroad operations.

    Specialized or Technical Knowledge, Education and Experience:

    • 10+ years of experience supporting enterprise network environments.
    • Hands-on experience with Cisco ISE.
    • Hands-on experience with Cisco Umbrella.
    • Experience with Cisco SmartNet support processes.
    • Experience with fiber and wired network infrastructure.
    • Azure networking experience (basic to intermediate).
    • Experience with Cradlepoint or cellular WAN devices.
    • Strong troubleshooting skills in real-world operational environments.
    • Ability to support business-critical systems where uptime and safety are priorities.
    • Comfortable working with vendors, contractors, and internal teams.
    • Experience supporting industrial, transportation, railroad, or field operations environments preferred.
    • Cisco and/or Azure certifications, or equivalent experience, preferred.
    • Familiarity with remote site networking.
    • Familiarity with backup and failover connectivity.
    • Familiarity with ITIL or structured IT support practices.
    • Practical, solutions-oriented mindset.
    • Strong sense of ownership and reliability.
    • Ability to balance security with operational needs.
    • Strong communication skills with technical and non-technical users.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to work in both office and railroad field environments.
    • Ability to respond to network incidents and outages affecting operational systems.
    • Ability to travel as needed.

    Environmental Conditions:

    • Works in a combination of office, railroad facility, terminal, yard, shop, and remote field environments.

    • Supports network infrastructure in operational railroad settings.

    • May require travel to railroad facilities, remote locations, and field sites.

    • Works in environments where uptime, safety, and operational continuity are critical.
