    Description

The Sr. Mgr of Network Deployment Scaling is the senior network deployment leader responsible for the end-to-end delivery of network infrastructure across one or more regions within the Global Network Deployment (GND) organization. GND owns the structured cabling, hardware deployment, and hardware commissioning that bring new network capacity online during data center build, scaling, and integration. As the most senior deployment role in the region, this leader carries managerial responsibility for the safety, quality, speed, scaling, efficiency, and cost of every network deployment in their portfolio.

This is a manager-of-managers role. You will build and lead high-performing teams of deployment managers and network technicians across multiple sites and regions, understand and manage their day-to-day delivery, and at the same time retain the technical capability and curiosity to dive deep into any given challenge as needed. Rather than executing within a defined plan, you will own and set the deployment strategy - defining the mechanisms, standards, and organizational structure required to deploy network capacity on time with zero rework, at the scale of the largest cloud network on the planet.

You will ensure the right resources and structure are in place to proactively stay ahead of our capacity demands while applying rigorous thinking around resource efficiency. Our leaders are deeply technical, understanding their environment well enough to accurately represent issues and implement strategies that continue to set new records for cycle time, quality, and staff efficiency. You will be integral to the wider infrastructure management senior leadership team, shaping new solutions and designs alongside our engineering, planning, and operations organizations, and you will own all aspects of people management across a geographically distributed team.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Hiring, developing, and leading a multi-layer organization of deployment managers, network technicians, and their teams across multiple sites and regions
    • Attainment of organizational performance goals and objectives relating to safety, quality, speed, capacity delivery, efficiency, and cost
    • Owning and driving the multi-region network deployment strategy - setting the direction, standards, and long-term roadmap for how to configure, deploy, and commission network infrastructure in AWS data centers
    • Building the mechanisms, tools, and processes that enable the organization to deliver network capacity on time with zero rework, and instilling the highest level of operational excellence across the deployment lifecycle
    • Owning end-to-end delivery of network infrastructure - including safety, scheduling, standards, and implementation
    • Proactively planning resourcing and organizational structure to stay ahead of capacity demand, while applying disciplined capital-efficiency thinking to deployment investments
    • Serving as an integral member of the infrastructure management senior leadership team - influencing and aligning cross-functionally with engineering, planning, and operations leadership on new solutions, designs, and deployment approaches
    • Continuous improvement of operational processes, procedures, methods, and tools, using data and metrics to set new records for cycle time, quality, and staff efficiency
    • Owning all aspects of people management for a geographically distributed team including hiring, development, performance management, promotions, and succession planning

Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
