Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.
About the Role
Blue Origin is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design supporting a new generation of advanced power systems hardware — from structural and mechanical components to thermal management systems and manufacturing drawings. You'll own mechanical subsystems end-to-end on a small, high-output team building at startup speed with aerospace rigor.
What You'll Do
Design and analyze hardware for advanced power systems
Perform structural (static, fatigue, modal) and thermal analysis using FEA to support design decisions and margin closure
Design cooling and thermal management systems (air, liquid, or hybrid) for high-performance equipment
Develop manufacturing drawings and tolerance stacks for components
Select bearings, couplings, seals, and other mechanical interface hardware
Support prototype build, assembly, and first-build test, including instrumentation planning for mechanical parameters
Collaborate with electromagnetic and power conversion engineers to resolve integrated design trade-offs (thermal, structural, electromagnetic)
Drive design decisions using analysis and test data
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, plus 8+ years of relevant experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Proficiency with structural/thermal FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus, or equivalent)
Strong fundamentals in structural mechanics and thermal management
Experience with GD&T, generating drawings, and working with manufacturing/machine shops
Experience with CAD software (NX preferred)
Must be able to comply with U.S. export control regulations, which may require U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated experience with mechanical design of electrical hardware
Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
Experience designing liquid or forced-air cooling systems for high-performance equipment
Hands-on experience supporting first-build assembly, alignment, and test of rotating equipment
Experience taking power electronics hardware from concept through detailed design, build, and test
Experience in aerospace, energy, or other highly regulated/high-reliability industries
Physical Requirements
Ability to work in an office, lab, and manufacturing/test environment; may require standing, bending, lifting up to 25 lbs, and use of PPE.
Base Pay Range for:
WA applicants is $156,802.00 - $219,522.45Other site ranges may differ
