    Sr Mechanical Engineer - Heavy Equipment for Marine Lifting & Transportion - JULY 2026 - 1403

    Our client in the North Seattle area needs a senior, hands-on mechanical design professional who can convert incomplete engineering concepts into controlled 3D layouts, interface definitions, bills of material, and shop-ready fabrication drawings. What the Candidate Must Accomplish

    • Review the existing models, drawings, calculations, customer-furnished information, decisions, and open issues.
    • Identify missing dimensions, interface conflicts, unsupported assumptions, and fabrication risks before detailing proceeds.
    • Stabilize and maintain the overall general arrangement, envelope, interface geometry, wheel locations, articulation, and component clearances.
    • Build and manage large 3D assemblies with reliable interference checking and configuration control.
    • Produce prioritized assembly, subassembly, weldment, plate, machining, and installation drawings suitable for internal review and eventual shop release.
    • Create and maintain bills of material, purchased-component schedules, material callouts, cut information, and weight roll-ups.
    • Incorporate Greg's engineering direction accurately and document questions or decisions that require his approval.
    • Support design reviews, vendor coordination, customer technical responses, shop redlines, fit-up questions, and as-built changes.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Seven or more years of progressively responsible mechanical design or design-engineering experience. Ten or more years is strongly preferred for the designer track.
    • Demonstrated ownership of welded steel assemblies, custom machinery, heavy mobile equipment, trailers, material-handling systems, marine equipment, aerospace ground-support equipment, or comparable one-off equipment.
    • Advanced proficiency in a parametric 3D CAD platform and demonstrated ability to manage large assemblies, configurations, reference geometry, interference, and drawing associativity.
    • Ability to create complete fabrication packages: general arrangements, assembly drawings, detail drawings, weldments, plate details, machined parts, BOMs, and purchased-item references.
    • Working knowledge of practical fabrication: structural shapes, plate, weld symbols, fit-up, tolerance accumulation, machining, bolt access, weld access, distortion, lifting/handling, and assembly sequence.
    • Ability to work from sketches, incomplete inputs, vendor data, and verbal engineering direction while clearly separating confirmed requirements from assumptions.
    • Strong written and verbal communication, including concise technical questions, drawing-review responses, and revision notes.

    Preferred Technical Experience

    • Trailer, transporter, axle, suspension, wheel-end, fifth-wheel, kingpin, brake, steering, or articulated-vehicle design.
    • Hydraulic steering circuits, cylinders, pivots, bearings, bushings, linkages, or hydraulic power-unit integration.
    • Structural load paths, section-property selection, bolted and welded connections, fatigue-sensitive details, and basic FEA interpretation.
    • Weight-property management, center-of-gravity tracking, axle-load distribution, stability, turning-envelope, or swept-path analysis.
    • AWS D1.1 familiarity, GD&T, ASME Y14 drawing practices, AISC structural shapes, and common commercial fabrication standards.
    • Aerospace cargo-envelope, ground-support-equipment, military transportability, or aircraft loading experience.
    • Supplier integration for tires, wheels, hubs, brakes, bearings, hydraulic components, controls, and fabricated or machined assemblies.
    • SolidWorks is preferred. Strong Inventor, Creo, CATIA, NX, or comparable parametric experience is acceptable when the candidate can transition quickly. AutoCAD or DraftSight experience is helpful for 2D legacy information.

    Education and Credentials

    A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, or a closely related field is preferred for the engineer track. An associate degree, technical-design credential, or equivalent experience is acceptable for the senior designer track when supported by a strong fabrication portfolio. A Professional Engineer license is beneficial but is not required unless Clientholm assigns independent approval responsibility that legally or contractually requires licensure.

    Working Style Required

    • Hands-on and comfortable walking into the shop to resolve manufacturability or fit-up questions.
    • Able to make progress without concealing uncertainty; documents assumptions and escalates decisions promptly.
    • Organized enough to maintain drawing numbers, revisions, BOM alignment, redlines, vendor data, and decision history.
    • Comfortable working directly with a senior engineer whose concepts may initially be communicated through sketches, markups, calculations, or verbal direction.
    • Able to challenge a geometry, interface, or fabrication assumption respectfully when evidence indicates a conflict.
    • Focused on usable engineering output rather than presentation-quality modeling alone.
    • Effective in a small-company environment where engineering, purchasing, project coordination, and shop needs overlap.
