    This position is responsible for applying reclaimed and domestic irrigation water to all landscaped areas throughout the memorial park; operating irrigation systems, manually and automatically, as needed to maintain healthy turf and other landscaped areas; and reporting any observed malfunctions or problems to the Grounds Supervisor in writing. This position will work alone at times and must be able to maintain strict irrigation schedules to ensure that adequate water is applied. Using a written schedule, the Irrigation Specialist will visit individual interment spaces and apply supplemental irrigation on an as-needed basis. This position will also perform or assist with the repair and maintenance of irrigation systems, including, but not limited to, fixing broken pipes, replacing sprinkler heads, and programming irrigation controllers, as well as performing a variety of grounds maintenance activities as instructed by the Grounds Supervisor.

    What You'll Be Doing

    • Operate and program automatic irrigation controllers and/or apply irrigation water manually to landscaped areas of the park, following a written schedule provided by the Grounds Supervisor.
    • Observe system operations and report all observed deficiencies in writing to the Grounds Supervisor at the close of each shift's watering schedule. Accurate observation requires the individual to walk the sections at various times during irrigation.
    • Identify problems and perform repair work on malfunctioning sprinkler heads, broken lateral pipes, risers, valves, or any other elements of the irrigation system, with or without assistance from the repair crew.
    • Identify and operate irrigation mainline and lateral valves throughout the memorial park.
    • Using a written schedule, irrigate previously closed individual interment spaces on an as-needed basis.
    • Proactively install "soaker" hoses and sprinklers to address dry patches in lawns during the growing season, as required.
    • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the assigned vehicle at all times; immediately report any mechanical problems to the Mechanical Shop and the Grounds Supervisor.
    • Ensure all equipment is in safe operating order for both employees and clients by reporting all observed hazards.
    • Maintain work areas and supply storage areas in a clean and orderly condition.
    • Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies, tools, and materials required for proper irrigation operations by informing the Supervisor when supplies may be running low.
    • Assist client families in a compassionate and caring manner with grounds maintenance requests.
    • Perform other duties as needed or required.
    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
    • Minimum 1-year large scale irrigation experience required.
    • Have a proactive approach and be able to meet deadlines and complete scheduled work assignments with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to operate heavy-duty equipment, company vehicles, a variety of hand tools, including shovels, valve keys, pipe wrenches, etc. Experience with these tools is preferred.
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
    • Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
    • Ability to problem solve taking into consideration a number of variables in standard and unique situations.
    • Valid California Driver's License, including state required levels of active auto insurance.
    • Ability to lift up to 100 lbs.
