Sr. Linux Security Engineer
Location: Leesburg, VA, onsite daily
Salary: $150-160k; may be negotiable based on education, experience, geographic location and other factors
Overview
This is a hands-on engineering role focused on building and evolving security capabilities from the ground up-not just monitoring, but creating, tuning, and optimizing detection systems in a Linux-heavy environment.
Key Responsibilities
Design, implement, and maintain security monitoring and detection systems
Develop and tune:
Alerting rules
Correlation logic
Anomaly detection models
Deploy, manage, and optimize Wazuh (or similar EDR platforms)
Integrate diverse log sources into SIEM platforms and ensure data quality
Build and enhance log aggregation pipelines (collection, parsing, normalization)
Perform log analysis and event investigation to validate and improve detections
Analyze network flow (NetFlow) data and incorporate into detection strategy
Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure high-quality security telemetry
Design and build dashboards and visualizations (OpenSearch/Elastic)
Document:
Logging architecture
Detection logic
Platform configurations
Operational procedures
Required Qualifications
Strong Linux systems administration experience
Hands-on experience with:
SIEM / log aggregation platforms (OpenSearch, Elastic, etc.)
Wazuh, OSSEC, or similar endpoint detection tools
Experience building and tuning security detections and alerts
Strong understanding of:
Log parsing, normalization, and ingestion pipelines
Security event analysis and investigation
Experience with scripting and automation (Python, Bash)
Ability to build and deploy security platforms, not just operate them
Preferred / Bonus Skills
Experience with:
Fluentd / Fluent Bit
rsyslog / syslog-ng
Suricata, Zeek
Sigma rules
MITRE ATT&CK framework
Experience with Ansible (automation, playbooks, roles)
Knowledge of:
DNS (Bind, PowerDNS, Unbound)
Proxies (Squid, HAProxy)
Exposure to offensive security / adversary mindset
What We're Seeking:
Builders - candidates who have created or significantly enhanced security platforms
Security engineering (not just monitoring) mindset
Experience deploying logging/detection systems from scratch or early stage
Strong Linux + infrastructure understanding
Ability to analyze, optimize, and operationalize security data
