Job Summary

The incumbent is responsible for sustaining an environment of intrinsic good will for the practice while providing optimum services to patients. The incumbent provides licensed medical support to medical care providers as a vocational nurse for the department/clinical team to which it is assigned. The incumbent is supervised by a licensed physician or registered nurse when performing duties within the vocational nurse scope of practice. The incumbent works under the direction of clinic/department management for administrative purposes, including customer service, professional behavior & development, assignment & scheduling of work, and performance of job functions not requiring supervision by a LIP.

• California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
• American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
• Must provide proof of valid Intravenous (IV) Therapy and Blood Withdrawal certification
• Must provide documentation of graduation from an accredited school of vocational nursing, or completion of education and experience as a corpsman in the United States military
• Minimum of two (2) years of Licensed Vocational Nurse experience.
• Ability to pass the safe to practice pharmacology exam.
• Skills within the scope of practice of a licensed vocational nurse.
• Knowledge of common medications, indications, dosage ranges, dilutions, side effects, and potential toxicity, and typical allergic reactions.
• Knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, with ability to recognize the abnormal.
• Observation skills to detect changes in patient's condition and potential adverse reactions to treatments.
• Knowledge of medical terminology sufficient to communicate effectively with patients, health care providers and insurance company representatives regarding appointments, services, procedures, authorizations and referrals.
• Ability to accurately interpret physician orders to ensure complete and up-to-date patient records.
• Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all co-workers; to consistently interact with patients and other members of the public with patience, courtesy and professionalism, both in person and on the telephone; and to effectively respond to individuals who may be angry or upset.
• Problem solving skills to independently define a problem identify the resources available to help solve the problem, create viable solutions and take the necessary action to implement problem resolution and ensure prompt and satisfactory resolution.
• Decision making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action and to appropriately seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached.
• Organizing skills to establish priorities for own work to accomplish a variety of concurrent assignments; respond flexibly to changes in priorities; and maintain work effectiveness in a setting with a high volume of patient activity and frequent interruptions.
• Ability to efficiently use computer system applications for all functions required for this position, including typing skills sufficient to use computer keyboard for timely and accurate input and production.
• Writing skills, using proper English grammar, spelling and punctuation, sufficient to compose messages and/or routine correspondence, which is clear, concise and easy to understand.
• Knowledge of clinic's practices and protocols related to medical records, medical assisting, nursing support, and other business and office procedures.
• Knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, and guidelines governing medical records; confidentiality, privacy, and provision toothers, including HIPAA.
• Basic knowledge of health care insurance systems as related to required job functions for this position, including Medicare, Medi-Cal, HMO, PPO, fee-for-service, and workers' compensation, sufficient to properly obtain and track authorizations, make referrals, coordinate hospital admissions, medication authorization, DME and explain provisions and requirements to patients.

Department Overview

UC Davis Health's Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, part of the Department of Surgery, offers a broad range of reconstructive procedures, led by Chief Granger B. Wong, M.D. Its board-certified surgeons take a skillful and artistic approach to cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, with specialties spanning aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgical procedures, craniofacial surgery, and hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgery. The division is dedicated to providing innovative, progressive care to patients requiring reconstructive surgery due to trauma, cancer resection, congenital defects, and related conditions, while contributing to scientific advances through clinical and laboratory research, often in collaboration with specialists in cardiothoracic surgery, surgical oncology, GI/bariatric surgery, and biomedical engineering. Clinical offerings range from breast reconstruction (including DIEP, PAP, and other perforator flap techniques) and scar/contracture management to cosmetic procedures like facelifts, rhinoplasty, and body contouring. The division also runs an ACGME-accredited residency program dating back to 1978, offering both a six-year integrated pathway and a three-year independent pathway for training future plastic surgeons. Clinics are based in Sacramento, including a location in the Cannery Business Park in East Sacramento.

Department Specific Job Scope

The LVN in UC Davis Health's Plastic Surgery clinic provides licensed vocational nursing support working under physician or physician assistant supervision. Core duties include rooming patients and taking vitals, reviewing surgical history and pre-op clearances, assisting with in-office procedures and providing post-operative care such as dressing changes, drain management, and suture removal for procedures ranging from flap-based breast reconstruction to body contouring. The LVN also educates patients on wound care and recovery expectations, triages patient calls, and documents care accurately in the EHR - all while adapting communication style across a wide patient population that includes pediatric craniofacial cases, trauma and cancer reconstruction patients, microvascular patients, and elective cosmetic surgery patients.
