The Senior Instructional Designer provides leadership in instructional innovation, project management, faculty development, training development, and community engagement in support of the department''s mission. This role partners closely with assigned academic departments to enhance course design, instructional effectiveness, and technology integration. Through collaboration and transparent communication with leadership, the Senior Instructional Designer drives initiatives that elevate teaching and learning across the university. In addition to supporting faculty in applying pedagogical theory, accessibility standards, and best practices, the Senior Instructional Designer designs and delivers comprehensive training programs for faculty, staff, and students and identifies emerging educational technologies to integrate meaningfully into learning environments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Project Management and Course Design Leadership

  • Lead in the design, development, and evaluation of online, hybrid, and in-person courses across assigned programs and departments.
  • Manage project timelines, deliverables, and cross-functional collaboration with subject matter experts, technology staff, and academic units.
  • Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL), accessibility (WCAG), and inclusive teaching standards to all instructional projects.

Faculty Collaboration and Departmental Consultation

  • Serve as the primary instructional design partner for assigned academic departments, building strong collaborative relationships
  • Consult with faculty to create learner-centered, accessible, and engaging instructional experiences
  • Provide expert guidance on pedagogy, assessment, inclusive practices, and educational technology integration
  • Conduct course and program-level reviews and support continuous improvement through evidence-based practices

Training, Development, and Professional Development Programs

  • Design, develop, and deliver comprehensive training programs, workshops, and webinars for faculty, staff, and students on instructional design, teaching strategies, and technology use
  • Foster cross-campus and intra-campus partnerships to enhance professional development opportunities and instructional excellence
  • Serve as a knowledge resource to peers and colleagues, sharing expertise, insights, and best practices to support team collaboration and continuous growth

Instructional Innovation and Emerging Technologies

  • Research, pilot, and implement emerging instructional technologies and innovative teaching methods
  • Lead initiatives to integrate advanced tools such as AI-enhanced learning, immersive technologies (AR/VR), and gamification into curriculum and faculty development programs
  • Represent the university at regional and national conferences, sharing best practices and building professional networks

Instructional Strategy and Best Practices

  • Collaborate with university stakeholders to enhance instructional strategy, implement best practices and processes, and promote accessibility and quality standards in teaching and learning initiatives.
  • Maintain awareness of trends in higher education, learning science, and instructional technology to inform future departmental strategies and utilize the supported technologies to meet the department''s goals and the strategic plan.

Required Qualifications:

Requirements:

A Master''s or Doctoral degree in Instructional Technology or related field

5-8 years relevant work experience

Experience and qualifications:

Experience in learning theory, online course development, faculty support, and higher education teaching experience.

Critical thinking, problem solving, setting own goals, and working to achieve the goals of the department.

Experience with project management and relevant processes, completing projects in a timely manner and achieving goals and objectives set forth by the needs of the faculty and students. Excellent communication skills.

Knowledge of current instructional technologies, primarily PC oriented but be able to cross-platform and troubleshoot for MacIntosh. Expertise with MS Windows OS and a variety of software, including MS Office Suite, Canvas, and multimedia/development software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. Must be knowledgeable of the web as an instructional tool.

Organized and efficient. Filing, time management skills, general business practices and protocols.

Knowledge of virtual reality and maker tools.

Strong written communication skills.

Strong oral communication/presentation skills.

Must be creative and able to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
