Job Description
Sr. Electrical Controls Engineer

Sr. Electrical Controls Engineer

Position Overview
We are seeking a Sr. Controls Engineer to lead the design, implementation and commissioning of industrial control systems for process and manufacturing facilities. The role focuses on PLC programming, HMI development, SCADA integration, and electrical control system design, with a strong emphasis on safe operation in hazardous environments. The ideal candidate will drive technical solutions across projects, ensure compliance with industry standards, mentor junior engineers, and coordinate with cross-functional teams and vendors to deliver reliable, maintainable control systems on schedule and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of control systems including PLC logic, interlocks, sequences, and control strategies for process and manufacturing equipment.
  • Develop and configure HMI screens and operator interfaces to provide clear, safe and maintainable system control and diagnostics.
  • Design electrical control schematics, wiring diagrams and panel layouts using AutoCAD; review and approve vendor electrical documentation.
  • Integrate and configure SCADA systems for data acquisition, alarming, historization and operator control; ensure secure and reliable remote access where required.
  • Program, simulate, and test PLC and HMI code in the factory and in the field; perform loop checks, FATs (Factory Acceptance Tests) and SATs (Site Acceptance Tests).
  • Ensure all control systems and installations meet hazardous area requirements and applicable standards (e.g., NEC/CEC, ATEX, IECEx); specify explosion-proof/equipment and grounding practices as required.
  • Troubleshoot complex control and electrical issues during installation and commissioning; provide timely root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation including logic narratives, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, panel BOMs, control narratives and test procedures.
  • Coordinate with project managers, process engineers, instrumentation specialists and vendors to align control system scope, schedule and cost.
  • Mentor and train junior controls engineers; lead technical reviews and participate in design verification and safety reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of controls engineering experience in industrial process or manufacturing environments with demonstrable project leadership.
  • Proven hands-on experience with PLC programming (e.g., Rockwell/AllenBradley, Siemens or equivalent) and PLC system architectures.
  • Strong HMI development experience (create intuitive operator interfaces, alarm management and diagnostics).
  • Practical experience designing electrical control systems and producing control schematics using AutoCAD; familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical is a plus.
  • Experience integrating and configuring SCADA systems, data historization and alarm/event management.
  • Working knowledge of hazardous area classifications and installation requirements (e.g., NEC/CEC, ATEX, IECEx) and specifying appropriate equipment for classified locations.
  • Experience commissioning control systems in the field, performing FATs/SATs, loop checks and system validation.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to work under schedule pressure and in industrial plant environments.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; experience coordinating cross-functional teams and managing external vendors.
  • Professional certifications such as PE, ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) or related credentials are desirable.
