Senior Claims Adjuster - REMOTE - must reside in Michigan

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Claims Adjuster to manage complex and high-value liability and automobile claims from initial assignment through resolution. This position will be responsible for conducting thorough investigations, evaluating liability and damages, managing reserves, negotiating settlements, and overseeing associated litigation.

The Senior Claims Adjuster will work closely with members, claimants, attorneys, external legal counsel, internal departments, and other service providers. This individual will also contribute to the development and implementation of claims and legal strategies designed to achieve department objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and establish new claims and reported losses in accordance with established claims handling procedures.
  • Conduct comprehensive investigations, gather facts, evaluate coverage, and make recommendations regarding complex claims.
  • Determine exposure and coverage issues involving commercial liability and automobile claims.
  • Communicate with members, claimants, attorneys, and other involved parties regarding coverage determinations and claims matters.
  • Evaluate the extent of injuries and damages and ensure appropriate supporting documentation.
  • Analyze liability based on applicable facts, circumstances, and law.
  • Establish, monitor, review, and adjust claim reserves in accordance with established reserving guidelines.
  • Determine settlement values and negotiate settlements within delegated authority.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough claim documentation and electronic files.
  • Manage and oversee litigation through resolution, working closely with defense counsel.
  • Review case evaluations, litigation plans, budgets, deposition summaries, pleadings, motions, and other legal documents.
  • Evaluate litigation strategies and make appropriate claims recommendations.
  • Grant settlement authority to defense counsel within delegated authority and evaluate potential subrogation opportunities.
  • Attend mediations, facilitations, settlement conferences, and trials as necessary.
  • Review and approve legal bills, expert retention, and appropriate litigation-related expenses within delegated authority.
  • Prepare reports for reinsurers when applicable.
  • Maintain effective communication with member representatives and obtain settlement approval when required.
  • Coordinate payments and negotiate settlements within established authority.
  • Collaborate with finance, membership services, underwriting, risk management, and other internal departments.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of claims handling, coverage, municipal liability, and related procedures.
  • Assist in developing and enhancing claims handling procedures and protocols.
  • Participate in professional development activities and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Professional designation such as ARM, CPCU, or AIC is desirable.
  • Michigan Adjuster’s License is desirable.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience will be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience handling complex and high-value liability and automobile claims.
  • Strong experience with complex commercial liability and automobile claims.
  • Experience managing litigated claims and working directly with defense counsel.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of commercial liability and automobile coverage, particularly within municipal or public-sector environments.
  • Thorough understanding of claims investigation, evaluation, reserving, negotiation, and settlement practices.
  • Ability to conduct detailed investigations, effectively interview individuals, and accurately document facts.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Proven negotiation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer service and relationship-management abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, electronic claims management systems, and electronic records systems.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Travel Requirements

  • Valid Michigan driver’s license required.
  • Ability to travel as needed, including occasional overnight business trips.

Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in a professional office environment and may include work at meetings, conferences, and member locations. The role requires the ability to concentrate for extended periods, communicate effectively in meetings, and perform typical office activities.

Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required, and occasional travel is part of the position.
