Job Summary:
The Specimen Technician provides operational support within the Specimen Processing Department, ensuring the accurate handling, preparation, and processing of laboratory specimens. This role performs various specimen processing functions including accessioning, presorting, centrifugation, aliquoting, imaging, and specimen delivery to laboratory teams.
Working in a production-focused laboratory environment, the technician ensures that all specimens are processed with accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to safety and compliance standards. The role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities while supporting high productivity and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform general specimen processing activities within the laboratory environment.
Conduct presort, accessioning, centrifugation, aliquoting, and specimen preparation tasks.
Transport and deliver processed specimens to appropriate laboratory departments.
Perform imaging and microfilming activities related to specimen processing.
Maintain productivity and quality standards within a high-volume production environment.
Accurately enter specimen and test order data into laboratory systems.
Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures and biohazard protocols.
Maintain organized and clean work areas to support safe laboratory operations.
Communicate effectively with laboratory staff and team members.
Adapt to changing workload demands and customer requirements.
Required Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience with data entry or computer-based systems.
Ability to maintain high accuracy and productivity in a production environment.
Ability to type and enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
Ability to work in a biohazard environment while following safety procedures.
Nice-to-Have Experience:
Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience.
Medical background or familiarity with clinical laboratory environments.
Knowledge of medical terminology related to laboratory testing.
Experience working in hospital laboratories or diagnostic facilities.
