Job Summary
Serve as the first point of contact for students, prospective students, and visitors in the Academic Advising Office, providing professional, courteous, and student-centered customer service. Perform front desk and receptionist responsibilities in a positive, welcoming, and efficient manner while creating a warm and supportive environment for all guests.
Assist students in person, by phone, and through other communication channels with scheduling advising appointments, answering general questions, and navigating college resources and services. Triage student needs, direct individuals to appropriate departments or support services, and proactively communicate student demand and service needs to advising staff. Utilize college resources, including the Advising website and college A-Z index, to provide accurate information and timely responses to frequently asked questions.
Support office operations during peak enrollment and registration periods by assisting with crowd management and maintaining an organized, customer-focused environment. Refer students to campus resources that support their academic and personal success and help ensure a seamless student experience.
This position is campus based, fully in-person and requires flexibility in both scheduling and work location. Typical business hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional Saturday hours (10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) during peak registration periods. Regular shift hours are Monday through Friday, 8am - 430pm. The primary work location is the Redwood Campus; however, assignments may vary based on departmental needs. Flexibility to work at multiple campus locations and adjust schedules as needed is required.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
Punctuality is essential due to the student-facing nature of this role. Candidates must demonstrate a high level of dependability, professionalism, and reliability. Strong communication skills, including active listening, verbal communication, and interpersonal effectiveness, are required, along with a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service and proactive problem-solving.
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Outlook, is strongly preferred. Experience operating a multi-line phone system and performing receptionist-related duties is preferred, as is the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Candidates should possess a basic understanding of college enrollment processes for both credit and SLTC programs, as well as a general knowledge of academic advising functions and responsibilities. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, prioritize and organize multiple tasks, and maintain a working knowledge of college policies, procedures, and office best practices.
Experience with conflict resolution is a plus. Additionally, candidates must be able to communicate professionally and effectively with individuals from a wide range of cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, abilities, and ethnicities, fostering positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff across the college.
Minimum qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent.
One (1) year of paid, full-time work experience, or the equivalent combination of part-time experience. Part-time experience will be calculated at a ratio of two (2) years part-time employment equaling one (1) year of full-time experience.
