    LOCATION: School Sites REPORTS TO: Director of Professional Development and School Improvement COMPENSATION: Range starts at 1 per mentee capped at 5 based on the W-WEA Collective Agreement POSTING DATES: August 18, 2026 - August 24, 2026 by 3:00 p.m.

    Wayne-Westland Community Schools is located in the metropolitan Detroit area, between Ann Arbor and Detroit. Our staff provides the very best educational opportunities for approx. 10,000 students from Westland, Wayne, Canton, Livonia, Garden City, Dearborn Heights, Inkster, and Romulus. The Wayne-Westland Community School district is comprised of ten elementary schools (K-5), three middle schools (6-8), and two high schools (9-12). We also have an early childhood center , an ultra -modern facilit y for career/technical training, an alternative high school, and a thriving online program.     ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

    • Develop and sustain an approachable, collaborative, and supportive relationship with all new teachers and new hires.
    • Offer ongoing mentoring to all new hires and new teachers for the first three years of employment. o Provide ongoing check-ins with new teachers and new hires o Hold one (1) monthly in-person meeting, outside of the contractual work day, for one (1) hour each month during the school year. Exceptions may be granted for those who are not in the same building o These building level monthly meetings should support mentee needs, address district recommendations, and include principal input.
    • Participate in ongoing training and projects related to job responsibilities, including monthly district meetings and professional development.
    • Provide district and building-level onboarding information and support. o Meet with new hires/teachers outside of the contractual day and monthly mentor meetings to complete the onboarding process.
    • Provide feedback to help develop content, facilitate and attend the two days of new teacher orientation o This may require short touch base meetings in the summer months.
    • Provide mentees with guidelines and resources to support the Professional Collaboration and Communication, Student Engagement, and Classroom Environment and Culture dimensions of the 5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning Instructional Framework. o Support building mentors in areas of professionalism such as building and fostering positive relationships with colleagues, new teachers, and administration.

    o Supports the development of an engaging, positive, and safe learning environment with guidance around classroom management and Social Emotional Learning.

    • Keeps current in best practices, teaching methodology, assessment, and educational technology.
    • Connect mentee with points of contact (ex. Instructional coach, department head, grade level lead, etc) for more training and support.
    • Keeps current in the areas of curriculum development and current research, teaching methodology, assessment, and educational technology.
    • Provide regular reports and work logs as assigned by the district mentor per district guidelines.
    • Articulate specific program needs to the district mentor.
    • Per the MDE, mentors will receive SCECHs for attending monthly district mentor meetings (2).
    • Special Education staff including Ancillary Staff, ACT 18 Special Education Programs and Special Education Categorical Classrooms shall each have a Mentor who is responsible for mentoring 1st, 2nd and 3rd year staff
    • The mentor shall provide support, training, and resources in writing and implementation of timely and compliant IEP's as outlined in IDEA
    • For Speech Language Pathologist Mentor-Mentor staff during clinical fellowship.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Must be eligible to work in the United States
    • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos
    • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
    • Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions
    • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community
    • Must have essential technology skills, i.e. skilled at using PC computer, laptop, assistive communication devices/technology and other educational technology and software

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to remain in a stationary position. The employee will be frequently moving around a classroom delivering instruction and will also be occasionally moving about the building to work with other colleagues. Frequently operates a computer and other technology in the classroom. The person in this position constantly communicates with students, parents, colleagues and administration and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with students, staff and occasionally with the public. This employee is directly responsible for the safety and well-being of students.

    TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Compensation is 5% of BA minimum based on the W-WEA collective bargaining agreement. Weekly hours worked may include planning meetings and/or practice, travel, events and/or games, and student study table. There is no expectation for average weekly hours to exceed 29 hours; therefore, the position is ineligible for benefits.
