Burlington Area School District is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Special Education teacher to join our elementary team at Waller Elementary School! Job Summary
This position is for a special education teacher in a self-contained autism program. This teacher would join a team that includes a special education teacher, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, and paraprofessionals focused on providing programming through the SCERTS framework. Experience working with young students diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder is required. Under the direction of the Building Principal or Director of Pupil Services, the licensed Special Education Teacher is required to identify goals that address educational needs specific to an individual with a disability; design and implement instruction formulated specially for that individual and those goals; monitor and evaluate the individual's progress toward the goals; and adjust instruction when the individual''s progress is unsatisfactory. Essential functions of this role are:
Collaborate effectively with multiple professionals involved with supporting our students
Comply with all procedural requirements of state and federal law in regard to the special education process
Create an engaging environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students
Work effectively within a self contained environment with a caseload of varying needs of students on the spectrum
Employ research-based instruction techniques, methods, materials and principles of learning to guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establish clear objectives through IEPs for all basic skills and to communicate these objectives to students and parents
Assess the accomplishments of students and provide progress reports as required, including IEP reviews on at least a yearly basis as required by law.
Diagnose the learning, behavioral, social, sensory and motor disabilities of students through the IEP process seeking the assistance of district specialists as required. Re-evaluate special education students through triennial IEP evaluations as required by law.
Communicate effectively and clearly with families on a daily basis.
Counsel with colleagues, students, and/or parents on a regular basis.
Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct. Develops rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
Plan and supervise purposeful lessons for educational assistants and, cooperatively with principal(s), evaluate their job performance.
Provide training for educational assistants on behavioral and educational plans.
Perform other related duties as delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the total school program.
Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees, as required
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
Valid teacher license for position as established by Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
Knowledge of principles, practices and methodology of effective teaching of students with disabilities.
Knowledge of procedural requirements required by Federal and State law with regard to the education of students with disabilities
Experience working with Autistic youth in an educational setting
Knowledge of relevant technology to assist in individualized instruction

Occasionally lift, move and support up to 50 pounds and lift up to an adult size body weight with two to three person lift (estimated 50 pounds of force)
Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide accurate information and assistance
Ability to interact with students who have difficulty controlling physical behavior
Able to complete job duties in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
Able to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and detail
