POSITION: Special Education Teacher
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
SALARY: Per Athens Education Association Master Agreement
EFFECTIVE DATE: August 24, 2026
Minimum Quali?cations:
? Possess a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education from an accredited college or university
? Valid Michigan teaching certi?cate
? Strong foundation in the essential instructional practices in literacy and mathematics
? ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) or EI (Emotional Impairment) certification recommended
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
? Teach Athens Area Schools approved curriculum.
? Be able to design IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) and implement them effectively.
? Willing and able to deliver effective classroom instruction and management.
? Regularly assess and progress monitor students and utilize data to drive instruction
? Be willing to attend meetings regarding special education development and share with the special education department.
? Be willing to participate in a variety of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities including staff development and curriculum development.
? Be willing to work as part of a building team for the improvement of instruction.
? Be open to continuous change.
? Be an excellent communicator with students, parents and colleagues.
? Differentiate and modify general education curriculum and lesson plans to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
? Develop and implement Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSP) and Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) for students requiring behavioral interventions.
? Coordinate and facilitate annual IEP meetings, REEDs (Review of Existing Evaluation Data), and manifestation determinations in strict compliance with IDEA and Michigan administrative rules for special education (MARSE).
? Collaborate closely with general education teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and other ancillary staff to ensure accommodations and modifications are provided in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).
? Direct, train, and supervise assigned paraeducators to ensure student safety, accommodation fidelity, and data collection.
? Maintain highly accurate, confidential records regarding student progress, service logs, and Medicaid billing (if applicable) in accordance with district policies and FERPA guidelines.
? Establish proactive, routine communication with parents and guardians to discuss student progress, goals, and strategies for generalizing skills at home.
? Maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
? Perform other related duties as assigned.
