The School District of Horicon is nestled in the heart of the internationally-known Horicon Marsh and is home to approximately 800 students. The Horicon School District is seeking qualified candidates to fill 2 Special Education Support Staff Aide positions at the at the Elementary School level. The qualified candidates will have the ability to work in a variety of settings, although the primary location of the paraprofessional support will be in a special education environment that supports students with significant disabilities. The paraprofessionals will collaborate with general and special education teachers to ensure the academic needs of a student are met in an inclusive school environment. The qualified candidates should be comfortable working with a variety of students including those who are nonverbal, and who struggle academically and behaviorally, and who need support with their personal care needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist teacher with instruction, support, and charting goals and objectives of the IEP.
  • Assist the teacher with devising special strategies for reinforcing skills based on an understanding of individual student and their needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Clearly communicate with teachers and staff regarding students and their needs.
  • Assist with supervision of students outside of classrooms including, but not limited to, hallways, lunchroom, recess/playground, field trips, media center, and emergency drills.
  • Provide clerical, record keeping, or other documentation needs related to students.
  • Assist students with personal needs and cares as necessary and appropriate, such as toileting, clothing, and programs/training.
  • Assist the teacher with preparing of learning materials and lessons.
  • Guide independent study, work time, enrichment, and reinforcement/remedial instruction.
  • Assist with lifting, moving, and the mobility of students from various locations and positions.
  • Work with individual, small groups, and large groups of students to reinforce learning of material and skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervising teacher, principal, and/or Director of Special Education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work with a variety of learners, displaying patience, empathy, and compassion.
  • Must be able to work independently and carry out oral/written tasks with little direction.
  • Discreetly handle information pertaining to students and families.
  • View students through a trauma-sensitive lens with the belief that all students can succeed.
  • Maintain high levels of ethical behavior and confidentiality.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Candidate must be 18 years of age, with a valid Wisconsin driver's license, hold a high school or equivalent diploma, and be able to pass a background check. Certified and/or eligible for Wisconsin certification as a Special Education Program Aide (883) from the Department of Public Instruction. Preference will be given to candidates who currently hold a WI Special Education Program Aide License. Basic computer skills required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office environment with minimal chance for personal injury. Frequent mental concentration is necessary for listening and responding to various situations. Occasional lifting and moving up to 50 pounds unassisted. Some twisting, bending, and turning is required. Work hours are generally during normal school day hours. This is a school year position and hours average 36.25 hours per week. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or illegal substance in the workplace in compliance with Policy 3122.01 throughout his/her employment in the District.
