The School District of Brown Deer is seeking a passionate and student-centered Special Education Teacher to serve in a self-contained classroom supporting students with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism. This role is ideal for an educator committed to inclusive practices, individualized instruction, and collaborative teamwork.
Instruction and Curriculum
- Design and deliver individualized instruction aligned to IEP goals and Wisconsin standards
- Support students' academic, communication, social-emotional, and functional skill development
- Implement evidence-based practices (e.g., structured teaching, visual supports, ABA-informed strategies)
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and families
- Supervise and support paraprofessional staff
- Promote inclusion and access to general education environments when appropriate
IEP Development and Compliance
- Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs in compliance with IDEA, state, and district regulations.
- Collect and analyze data regularly to measure student progress toward IEP goals.
- Write measurable goals, present levels of performance, and progress reports.
- Participate in and facilitate IEP meetings, ensuring family engagement and collaboration.
Behavior and Social-Emotional Support
- Implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and individualized Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
- Conduct or support Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) as needed.
- Teach and reinforce replacement behaviors, self-regulation, and social-emotional skills.
- Maintain a safe, predictable, and structured classroom environment.
Classroom Management and Environment
- Design and maintain a structured classroom using visual schedules, work systems, and clear routines.
- Ensure classroom organization supports independence and reduces anxiety.
- Manage paraprofessional staff, including assigning roles, modeling strategies, and providing feedback.
- Ability to lift, move, or assist students as needed.
- Exposure to behaviors associated with students with intensive needs.
- Requires flexibility, patience, and strong problem-solving skills.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education (Master's degree preferred).
- Valid Wisconsin teaching license in Special Education (e.g., Cross-Categorical #1801 or equivalent DPI licensure).
- Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA and Wisconsin DPI special education requirements.
- Experience working with students with Intellectual Disabilities and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder.
