    JOB OBJECTIVE

    Supervise all aspects of transportation for students with special needs, including safety and efficiency.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provide leadership and direct supervision to the Special Education Route Coordinator.
    • Monitor and evaluate special needs transportation routes and services to ensure efficiency, safety, and compliance with IEP requirements.
    • Collaborate with school staff, special education teams, and parents to address and resolve transportation-related concerns for students with disabilities.
    • Assist in the recruitment, training, and performance evaluation of bus drivers and monitors assigned to special education routes.
    • Coordinate training on transporting students with disabilities, including proper use of equipment, behavioral strategies, and emergency procedures.
    • Review and approve route changes, additions, or deletions in cooperation with the Route Coordinator to ensure optimal coverage.
    • Serve as a liaison between the transportation department and the special education department as well as outside agencies.
    • Conduct ride-alongs and site visits to evaluate service quality and support staff.
    • Maintain accurate records related to routes, student assignments, driver certifications, and compliance audits.
    • Respond promptly to incidents or emergencies involving special needs transportation.
    • Stay current with laws, regulations, and best practices related to special education transportation.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
    • Be willing to occasionally work extended hours including evenings or weekends for emergencies or special events.
    • Collaborate, support, and supervise with the Special Education Route Coordinator in their job description:
    • Organize and establish Special Education routes and shuttles for the school year; revise schedules as required throughout the school year.
    • Interact with children, parents, teachers and other employees in a safe, proper and helpful manner.
    • Maintain the computer information system used to assign Special Education students to transportation.
    • Investigate and design solutions to all parental, teacher and administrative concerns about Special Education student transportation.
    • Assign field trips and special events to Special Education drivers and monitors in accordance with the SEE agreement.
    • Design and conduct training for drivers and monitors on safety practices and evacuation procedures unique to the needs of Special Education students.
    • Maintain and update emergency confidential information sheets for all students needing Special Education Transportation.
    • Supervise drivers and monitors on observance of school policies pertaining to driving, payroll, overtime, leave, alcohol and drug abuse. Train personnel concerning confidentiality issues and laws that pertain to the transportation of Special Education students.
    • Attend all meetings as required by various school officials pertaining to Special Education student transportation.
    • Organize and supervise the transportation of Special Education students involved in the Extended School Year summer program.
    • Perform data recording/record keeping operations requiring logging, filing or posting single entry items either manually or by computer.
    • Read and interpret routine written or printed materials such as basic blueprints, charts, diagrams, maps or instruction materials that pertain to the transportation of Special Education students.
    • Implement any changes in law, policies, procedures, etc.
    • Provide training in operating policies and procedures.
    • Work with Transportation Payroll Clerk to continually the latest information for all employees.
    • Follow all rules for Transportation Bus Driver/Monitor when working in that capacity.
    • Ability to train others and properly utilize 2-way radio system to communicate with vehicles in a positive and calm manner.
    • Oversee and provide CPR and CPI training/certification in accordance with all state/EPS rules.
    • Maintain records pertaining to students riding the bus for use by school sites at IEP meetings.
    • Obtain an annual State physical and pre-employment drug screening. Be involved in monthly random drug screening in accordance with Federal/District standards.
    • Provide backup support for all departments of Transportation.
    • Other duties may be assigned.

    Length of Contract: Two hundred forty (240) contract days.

    EVALUATION:The performance of this job will be evaluated by the Director of Transportation in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policies and state law.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required

    • Education: Relevant 2 year Degree or Higher OR

    Previous Experience: 1-3 years in related field of transportation, special education, and/or supervisory duties

    • Ability to work cooperatively with others, demonstrate self-discipline and initiative, and follow state and district guidelines
    • Strong communication, leadership, supervisory, and interpersonal skills.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    Preferred: Class "A" or "B" CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsements and no air brake restriction. SDE school bus certification. Physical completed in accordance with all state/EPS rules. CPI and CPR instructor/certification preferred in accordance with all state/EPS rules.
