JOB DESCRIPTION The Special Education Teacher serves students with IEPs who have a variety of abilities/disabilities and needs. They provide both core academic instruction and supportive instruction across general education and special education settings. REQUIRED EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION

• Valid Michigan teaching certificate.
• Full approval in at least one area of special education (ASD, CI, LD, or EI).

QUALIFICATIONS

• Strong assessment background, including test selection, administration, and interpretation relative to special education eligibility.
• Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written.
• A strong commitment to educating students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment, as demonstrated by experience with co-teaching or other collaborative delivery models.
• A wealth of research-based instructional strategies to address the academic needs of students with various disabilities, as well as skills in a variety of flexible behavior management strategies.
• Proficiency in integrating technology into instruction as a tool for student learning.
• The ability to independently and accurately implement the requirements of IDEA and Michigan's Special Education Rules on behalf of caseload students.
• Experience working with elementary and/or secondary students with disabilities.
• The ability to provide leadership/mentoring to peers and parents relative to the requirements of IDEA and Michigan's Special Education Rules.
• Evidence of outstanding organizational and leadership skills including solid understanding and meticulous observance of district procedures, state requirements, and federal regulations; demonstrated ability to prioritize a timeline-driven workload in multiple locations; history of timely and accurate completion of reports and special education paperwork; ability to lead diverse teams to consensus; and productive relationships with parents, coworkers, administration and external resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

• Developing and implementing the IEPs for a caseload of students with a variety of disabilities.
• Providing direct instruction in core content within the special education setting.
• Providing instruction that is supportive of the general education curriculum, whether in a pullout model or a co-teaching setting.
• Monitoring/documenting student progress on IEP goals.
• Collaborating with general education teachers, other special education team members, administrators, and parents to meet the needs of students.

• Interacts with and provides information to the community regarding special education programs.
• Promotes and communicates high expectations of student performance.
• Communicate with parents regarding student progress, concerns, and programs.
