POSITION OVERVIEW: Bloomfield Hills Schools District seeks a compassionate, skilled Preschool SXI (Severely Cross Categorical Impaired) Special Education Teacher to support young children with significant and multiple disabilities. The teacher creates an inclusive, nurturing, learning environment that promotes each child's communication, development, participation, independence, and well-being. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference for children and families through individualized instruction and collaborative care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized education programs (IEPs) for preschool

students with severe and multiple disabilities

  • Assess student strengths, needs, and developmental progress; use assessment information to guide instruction and report progress to families and the IEP team
  • Adapt curriculum, materials, communication supports, and teaching strategies for students with significant cognitive, physical, and/or sensory impairments
  • Plan and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction that supports learning, communication, social interaction, daily living skills, and participation
  • Collaborate with families, general education staff, and related services providers, including occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, and social workers, nursing staff, and specialists
  • Coordinate and provide direction to paraprofessionals and classroom aides to support consistent, safe, and effective programming
  • Maintain an organized, accessible classroom and safely use, monitor, and coordinate specialized equipment and assistive technology
  • Establish positive behavioral supports and follow individualized behavior and safety plans, including district procedures for crisis response
  • Coordinate and work collaboratively with paraprofessionals and classroom aides to support consistent, safe, and effective programming during medical incidents

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess a valid Michigan teaching certificate with Special Education Endorsement in Cognitively Impaired (SA)
  • ZA/ZS Endorsement required
  • Experience working with severely multiply/cognitively impaired students preferred
  • Experience with AAC devices, mobility devices, and medical needs preferred

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Wing Lake Developmental Center

COMPENSATION BENEFITS: Pursuant to the BHEA bargaining unit agreement, the current salary range for this position is $55,749- $127,136 (based on 206 days). Placement offer on the BHEA salary schedule is commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications. Bloomfield Hills Schools offers excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance. Short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance are provided by the district. The District makes contributions to the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement pension system.
