EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or Equivalent

Completion of forty-eight (48) college hours at an accredited college or university and/or possess an Associate's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university (Required for employment in Title I schools only)

One month related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Training in behavior management and restraint techniques as prescribed by the District

CERTIFICATION:

Paraprofessional Certification as required by the State Board and the District,

Spanish Fluency required for ECSE/ALE Linguistic Support only

High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.

PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY:

Supports the implementation of each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), including instructional accommodations, modifications, behavioral supports, communication strategies, and personal care or health-related needs as assigned. Paraprofessionals may provide instruction provided they are working under the direct supervision of a "highly qualified teacher" (Title I Schools Only).

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides Individualized instructional, academic, behavioral, and personal support to students with disabilities as directed by the supervising teacher or appropriate professional.

2. Implements instructional activities, accommodations, modifications, and interventions developed or assigned by the supervising teacher or appropriate professional.

3. Provides appropriate assistance with activities of daily living and personal care, which may include feeding, toileting, dressing, mobility, positioning, personal hygiene, and other health or physical needs identified by the school and assigned to the position.

4. Assists with safe transfers, mobility, positioning, and use of adaptive equipment or assistive devices in accordance with student needs, school procedures, and required training.

5. Supports students' communication needs, including the use of communication systems, visual supports, sign language, assistive technology, or other established communication strategies as appropriate to the student's program.

6. Implements teacher-directed behavioral supports designed to promote positive behavior, student engagement, self-regulation, and successful participation in the school environment.

7. Responds to behavioral concerns using approved de-escalation, prevention, and intervention strategies and follows established student safety and crisis-response procedures.

8. May participate in emergency safety interventions only when appropriately trained and authorized, and in accordance with district policy, applicable law, and established student-specific procedures.

9. Follows established procedures for responding to students who leave assigned areas or present a potential safety concern, including promptly notifying appropriate staff and seeing assistance when necessary.

10. Collects and documents student performance, behavior, or other data as directed by the supervising teacher.

11. Assists teachers and other school personnel in preparing instructional materials, organizing learning environments, adapting classroom materials, and maintaining an orderly and accessible classroom.

12. Assists with the appropriate use, care, inventory, and maintenance of classroom, adaptive, instructional and assistive equipment.

13. Provides appropriate assistance to substitute teachers regarding assigned student needs, classroom routines, and established procedures.

14. Maintains required training related to crisis prevention, health procedures, communication systems and other areas required to meet the needs of assigned students.

15. Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to the individual needs of students.

16. Participates in required professional development, staff meetings, trainings and school activities as assigned.

17. Maintains confidentiality of student information and follows district policies, professional standards, and applicable laws governing student records and privacy.

18. Reports to work on time every day.

19. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher, administrator or other authorized school personnel

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination and drug testing
• Ability to lift 100 pounds with assistance
• Ability to work well with children
• Ability to work with children with disabilities
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, kneel, squat, bend, stoop, and twist. The employee will have use of hands to hold and manipulate objects and assist with student positioning, reaching, overhead reaching, grasping, and keyboarding. The employee is required to run or walk and may need to use non-violent physical intervention (to include possible physical restraint) to maintain control of students. The employee is regularly required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds individually and 100 pounds with assistance as lifting and transferring of students is needed. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision as well as depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must pass a pre-employment physical examination to include vision and hearing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The environmental characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to work in a confined space, exposed to outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The employee is regularly biologically exposed to bacteria and communicable diseases. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
