Provide or supervise personal care and medical care as stated in the IEP (Individualized Education Plan).

Primary Purpose:

Provide students with disabilities learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth in order to increase independence in the areas of education/training, employment and independent living. Work collaboratively with the Adult Transition teacher, job coaches, and community members while delivering appropriate specialized instruction in the special education classroom and/or community environment. Implement services and instructional needs identified by the Admission, Review & Dismissal (ARD) Committee. Apply instructional best practices as related to specialized instruction aligned to best practices for increasing positive adult transition while meeting unique needs of the individual learner with disabilities. Work in special education classrooms, community locations, teams, or departmental capacities as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED

Associate's degree, two years of study at an institute of higher learning, or have met formal

academic assessment required by federal and state laws and board policy

Educational Aide Certification (preferred)

College hours towards Education Certification (preferred)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of specialized instructional research based practices

Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues

Knowledge of Admission, Review & Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP)

Ability to use student data to guide instruction

Knowledgeable of instructional best practices for varying degrees of disabilities and needs

Ability to deliver engaging instruction to meet the varied needs of all learners

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional strategies:

• Provide instruction in classrooms and in the community through comprehensive planning and collaboration with other professionals while providing engaging instruction with frequent feedback to learners.
• Implement instructional, therapeutic or skill development programs for students with disabilities while collecting ongoing data regarding the effectiveness of implementation.
• Increase the level of rigor and student achievement by providing quality instruction in employment skills, independent living, and education/training while accommodating and/or modifying instruction to meet the unique needs of the student.
• Implement effective instructional strategies that support each student's special medical, physical, communicative and emotional needs.
• Provide personal care services including, but not limited to: communication, feeding, personal hygiene, transitioning, transferring in and out of wheelchairs, lifting/positioning, and bathroom needs.
• Implement strategies for maintaining an environment conducive to student learning and utilize effective teaching methods which minimize behavioral needs including utilization of visual supports when necessary.
• Use technology in the teaching and learning process.

Student Growth and Development

• Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formative and summative

assessments.

• Provide personal care, medical care and feeding of students if indicated in IEP.
• Assume responsibility for transporting to and from community job sites.
• Participate in staff development activities to improve overall job-related skills.
• Increases knowledge of state and local curriculum guidelines and materials for students with

disabilities.

• Be a positive role model for students; support the mission of the school district.

Classroom management and Organization

• Support a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of the students.
• Manage student behavior. Implement district procedures and Behavior Intervention Plans including intervening in crisis situations as necessary according to the student's IEP.
• Collect documentation aligned to the student's IEP.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.

Communication

• Maintain professional relationships with colleagues to ensure continuation of best practices related to specialized instruction for students with disabilities.
• Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Other

• Keep informed of and stay compliant with federal, state, district and school regulations and policies for special education students.

Mental demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Wheelchair lift, ramp, personal computer, copier and audiovisual equipment.

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent driving, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. Exposure to biological hazards. May be required to assist students with physical and/or emotional disabilities including regular heavy lifting of students; Assist in the control of behavior through physical restraints; and assist non-ambulatory students when needed.
