Position Summary:
At Equity Bank, we believe strong credit administration and proactive risk management help drive long-term success. The Special Assets Specialist plays a key role in supporting the bank's asset quality, regulatory compliance, and internal control processes.
Reporting to the Special Assets Department Lead and VP Director of Special Assets / Senior Credit Officer, this position is responsible for special assets reporting, repossession administration, classified loan reviews, insurance claim processing, and ongoing monitoring of problem credits. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with senior leadership and contribute directly to the bank's credit risk management strategy.
 
Responsibilities and Expectations
 
Key Responsibilities
Reporting & Internal Controls
  • Prepare and distribute monthly reports supporting the bank's SOX compliance and internal control requirements
  • Monitor and report charge-offs of $10,000 or greater
  • Track loans returning to accrual status for relationships of $250,000 or greater
  • Track loans moving to nonaccrual status for relationships of $250,000 or greater
  • Compile monthly charge off activity and review supporting documentation to ensure appropriate approvals have been obtained
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting to senior management and key stakeholders
Repossession Administration
  • Prepare transfer documentation for repossessed assets moving to the bank's Other Assets General Ledger account
  • Monitor and manage repossessed assets throughout the recovery and disposition process
  • Maintain detailed reporting on repossession activity, including:
    • Repossession aging and timelines
    • Region and lender origination
    • Charge-off activity at transfer
    • Time to sale
    • Gain or loss on disposition
    • Financial impact and overall cost benefit of each repossession
  • Identify trends and opportunities to improve recovery outcomes
Credit Administration
  • Process total loss insurance claims and ensure timely resolution
  • Conduct periodic reviews of classified loans to verify proper accrual status and risk ratings
  • Recommend changes to risk ratings or accrual status when appropriate
  • Partner with Special Assets leadership to develop action plans and strategies for problem credit relationships
  • Support portfolio monitoring and risk mitigation efforts
Regulatory Compliance
  • Stay current with applicable banking laws, regulations, and industry best practices
  • Maintain strong documentation and record retention standards
  • Assist with audits, examinations, and compliance reviews as needed
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned
Required Skills & Education
 
Requirements
  • Associate's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Banking, or a related field required
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in banking, credit administration, loan operations, collections, special assets, or a related financial services role
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to interpret financial information, credit data, and risk indicators
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Advanced organizational and time management skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with lenders, credit partners, and senior leadership
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development within the banking industry
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience working with classified assets, delinquent loans, repossessions, or credit risk management
  • Knowledge of commercial and consumer lending practices
