The City is looking for a dependable, safety-focused individual to join a collaborative Solid Waste team as a Solid Waste Technician, where every member plays a vital role in keeping operations running smoothly. Work-life balance is a core part of the culture. With a consistent 4-day workweek (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) starting early at 5:30 AM, you'll finish your day well before dinnertime-giving you more time at home while maintaining full-time stability.

You'll work on collection routes, handling trash, recycling, yard waste, and bulky items while riding on the back of trucks. Duties include cart delivery and repair, assisting drivers, maintaining clean vehicles, and safely disposing of materials at designated sites. No two days are the same, and teamwork is key

The department is looking to hire for this position quickly

Solid Waste Technicians are required to work most City holidays and support cleanup efforts for City sponsored events and festivals. This position is also considered essential and may be required to work before, during and after inclement weather events.

Typical Tasks

  • Ride on the back of collection trucks to complete daily trash and recycling routes

  • This involves pulling carts from the curb, placing carts on tipper, activating tipper to dump cart, activating packing system, removing carts from tipper, returning cart to curb and picking up loose vegetation

  • Collect trash, recycling, and vegetative debris by emptying carts, bags, and cans as well as manual lifting

  • Load and dispose of bulky items such as furniture, metal, electronics, or construction debris that won't fit in standard carts

  • Deliver, repair, and replace trash and recycling carts for residents and businesses

  • Assist with debris disposal using the truck's automated ejection system at designated sites

  • Support Solid Waste Operators and fellow crew members as needed

  • Assists the driver with cleaning of truck by removing trash from inside cab, using a pressure washer and brush to clean the truck and performing other duties as assigned

  • Abide by all safety standards and protocols

Qualifications

Education: Ability to read and write at a minimum of the 8th grade level of education.

Other Requirements:

  • Experience and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to obtain FEMA independent study course certificate within 60 days of hire

  • Ability to comply with written and oral instructions.

  • Computer skills necessary for training and record keeping.

  • This position is considered essential in times of emergency or natural disaster and is required to work most City-sponsored events and festivals and City observed holidays.

This position is required to undergo a post-offer drug screen, background check and pre-employment physical.

Physical Demands:

  • Push and pull over 100 lbs. occasionally - candidate will be asked to push and pull a sled weighing 90 pounds
  • Lift and carry 50-100 lbs. frequently - candidate will be asked to climb, lift and walk carrying 80 pounds, 5 times
  • Lift or carry 20-50 lbs. constantly - candidate will have to climb, lift and walk carrying 50 pounds, 5 times

Health Benefits are offered to employees working at least 30 hours per week.

Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account. Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following hire for employees and their eligible dependents. Both you and the City contribute to the overall cost of coverage.

Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following hire. Employees, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for coverage.

Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary. Supplemental insurance is available for employees to purchase. Optional coverage for dependents is also available for purchase.

Retirement:

  • NC Local Government Retirement System - All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.
  • Deferred Compensation - The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to a 401(k) plan regardless of employee contribution. Employees may choose to contribute additional money to the 401(k) or 457 deferred compensation plans, without a match from the City, within the IRS guidelines.

Paid Leave (offered to employees working at least 1,000 hours annually*):

  • Sick Leave - 12 days accrued each year
  • Annual Leave - Accrual based on years of service and classification. Employees can earn from 10 to 24 days each year.
  • Holidays - 13 paid holidays annually
  • Paid Parental Leave - Six weeks of paid leave for the birth, adoption or placement of a child (must run concurrently with FMLA).
  • Part-Time Employees will earn paid leave benefits on a pro-rated basis.
