Position Information

The City of Brentwood is seeking a motivated and experienced leader to join the Public Works team as the Solid Waste Supervisor. The City is looking for a collaborative professional with strong communication skills, sound operational experience, and a passion for public service. This position plays a key role in leading daily operations, developing employees, ensuring regulatory compliance, and delivering high-quality solid waste services to the community.

The ideal candidate will have experience in municipal solid waste operations, including transfer station operations, residential and commercial collection, recycling and organics programs, roll-off services, and container delivery. This position is responsible for overseeing daily operations while ensuring compliance with State and Federal regulations, including SB 1383, and supporting the Citys long-term sustainability goals.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate the daily work of solid waste operations staff.
  • Monitor daily operations, adjust staffing and resources, and maintain high service levels.
  • Promote a culture of safety through training, field inspections, and OSHA compliance.
  • Oversee transfer station operations and ensure compliance with environmental regulations, permits, and City standards.
  • Lead the Citys ongoing SB 1383 compliance/implementation efforts, including organics collection, contamination reduction, public outreach, and regulatory reporting.
  • Respond to customer concerns and work proactively to resolve service issues.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop employees while fostering accountability and teamwork.
  • Assist with budget administration, contract oversight, purchase orders, and operational planning.
  • Manage compliance programs related to CalRecycle reporting, GIS mapping, environmental regulations, and facility permits.
  • Collaborate with City departments, contractors, and regulatory agencies to continuously improve service delivery.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade with specialized training in solid waste and recycling transfer, disposal, and equipment maintenance.
  • Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in the operation and maintenance of solid waste and recycling facilities, including one (1) year lead experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Depending on assignment possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record must be maintained throughout employment.

The examination process will consist of:

  • Application Review - Submitted applications will be assessed based on job-related qualifications, including desirable qualifications and the specific needs of the hiring department. Candidates may be screened to identify those who are best qualified to proceed in the examination process.
  • Panel Board Interview - Those candidates identified as best qualified will be invited to a panel board interview, tentatively scheduled for the week of October 19, 2026.

Eligible List: All applicants that pass the examination process will be placed on the eligible list which is good for at least 6 months and may be extended up to an additional 18 months. This eligible list will be used by the City of Brentwood to fill all current and future openings in this classification as long as the list is active.
