The Role and Impact

Intel is seeking a highly motivated Software Research Intern (PhD) to join the TCAD Software Development team within Intel Foundry. This internship offers an opportunity to work on advanced computational software solutions supporting semiconductor technology development. The selected candidate will contribute to cutting-edge software applications involving computational geometry, scientific computing, visualization, CAD technologies, and high-performance computing.

The internship is designed for PhD students interested in applying software engineering and research expertise to solve complex engineering challenges while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across Intel. 

Business Group

The Intel Foundry Technology Development (TD) organization is focused on driving semiconductor process innovation and enabling future technology nodes. Within the LTD-TD TCAD team, engineers and researchers develop advanced simulation, modeling, and software solutions used to accelerate technology development. The team fosters a collaborative environment where software, mathematics, physics, and engineering intersect to solve challenging technical problems.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize software solutions for engineering and research applications. 

• Participate in architecture design, feature development, prototyping, testing, and performance optimization. 

• Develop and enhance computational geometry algorithms and scientific software tools. 

• Create and improve 2D and 3D visualization capabilities using modern graphics technologies. 

• Develop numerical methods and simulation capabilities using finite element, level set, or related techniques. 

• Collaborate with software engineers, researchers, and domain experts to deliver scalable and maintainable solutions. 

• Perform software development, debugging, and performance analysis in Linux environments. 

• Document technical solutions and present findings to project stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• Candidates must be currently pursuing a PhD in one of the following or related disciplines with a strong software focus: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics or other closely related technical fields

• Minimum 3 months of educational, research, laboratory, internship, or industry experience.

• Strong academic performance with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred.

• 3+ months of academic or professional experience in one or more of the following: 

- Python and/or C++ programming

- Computational Geometry

- Scientific Visualization

- CAD Tool Development

- Optimization Algorithms

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and software development skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in at least two of the following areas:

• Computational geometry algorithm design, analysis, and implementation (2D and 3D).

• Computer graphics and scientific visualization using OpenGL and/or ray tracing technologies.

• Contribute to CAD and geometry processing workflows involving solid modeling and voxel-based representations.

• Implement and optimize mesh generation algorithms for engineering simulations.

• 2D and 3D mesh generation algorithms, including: 

- Delaunay triangulation

- Quad meshing

- Hex meshing

• CAD geometry representation, solid modeling, and voxel processing.

• Numerical analysis techniques including: 

- Finite Element Methods (FEM)

- Level Set Methods

- Related computational modeling approaches

• Parallel programming and high-performance computing.

• Experience developing scalable scientific or engineering software applications.

• User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) development for scientific or engineering software.

• Experience with Qt framework for desktop application development.

• Image processing and visualization techniques for scientific and engineering applications.

Annual Salary Range for jobs which could be performed in the US: $149,598.00-149,602.00 USDThe range displayed on this job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target compensation for the position across all US locations.
