About the Role

Our client is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the development and delivery of its customer-facing technology. This leader will be responsible for ensuring the engineering team consistently delivers high-quality, reliable products while maintaining a scalable and sustainable codebase.

The Senior Engineering Manager will lead a team of approximately 6-8 full-stack engineers, with responsibility for both engineering performance and individual development. This person will create an environment where engineers can do their best work, receive meaningful feedback, continue developing their skills, and collaborate effectively.

This is a technically engaged leadership position best suited to someone with a strong background in full-stack software development. While this role is not expected to contribute feature code on a regular basis, the Senior Engineering Manager will remain closely connected to the technical work. This includes reviewing pull requests and technical approaches, contributing to architectural discussions, and partnering with senior engineers and technical leads to continuously improve the applications and development environment.

The Senior Engineering Manager will also work closely with Product on planning, estimation, prioritization, and resource allocation. They will provide visibility into engineering progress, risks, and tradeoffs and serve as an important connection between the engineering team and Engineering, Product, and Design leadership.

Core Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Development - 50%

• Manage and support a team of 6-8 engineers through regular one-on-one meetings, actionable feedback, and clearly defined professional development plans.

• Help senior engineers and developing technical leads strengthen their leadership capabilities through ongoing coaching and career conversations.

• Coach engineers on developing clear, maintainable, and sustainable software, including effective use of AI-assisted development tools where appropriate.

• Assess the team's technical capabilities and identify opportunities to address skill gaps through hiring, training, or cross-functional development.

• Create a supportive and inclusive team environment built around trust, open communication, and constructive approaches to performance management.

• Establish team practices and working agreements collaboratively, while monitoring engagement, development, and opportunities for continuous learning.

Technical Quality & Architecture - 20%

• Review pull requests, significant code changes, technical proposals, specifications, and relevant product design documentation.

• Maintain sufficient familiarity with the codebase and system architecture to provide informed technical guidance and collaborate with technical leads on application improvements.

• Promote strong engineering practices related to code quality, testing, continuous integration and deployment, release management, and overall application health.

• Help establish and reinforce consistent architectural and development patterns, including approaches to data architecture, protection of sensitive information, and integrations with external platforms and service providers.

• Develop or implement software-based improvements that make internal workflows and company processes more effective.

• Help the team make thoughtful decisions about when to address technical debt and when to prioritize new product capabilities.

Planning & Delivery - 20%

• Partner with Product on estimation, team capacity, staffing and resource needs, and sprint planning.

• Translate organizational and product objectives into achievable engineering plans, clearly communicating priorities, dependencies, constraints, and tradeoffs.

• Establish realistic delivery expectations and provide stakeholders with timely visibility into progress, risks, and blockers.

• Identify and resolve obstacles to delivery, including dependencies involving other teams or functions.

• Communicate engineering progress, key decisions, risks, and delivery considerations to Engineering, Product, and Design leadership.

• Evaluate development and release workflows for opportunities to improve efficiency, creating repeatable practices that increase delivery speed while maintaining quality.

Reliability, Incidents & Compliance - 10%

• Partner with engineers to establish appropriate standards for system reliability, security, observability, and monitoring.

• Support an engineering ownership model in which development teams share responsibility for the reliability of the systems they build, including alerting and on-call responsibilities.

• Help lead the response to production incidents and support a consistent incident-management process, including post-incident reviews and customer-facing communications when appropriate.

• Participate in management-level escalation processes for significant alerts, outages, or other production issues.
