We are seeking a highly skilled Embedded Software Engineer to design, develop, and integrate software for embedded systems across the full development lifecycle. You will work from requirements analysis and architecture through implementation, testing, verification, and formal validation, with a strong emphasis on ensuring robust, reliable, and compliant solutions. In addition to hands-on technical development, you will support proposal efforts by translating customer requirements into clear work tasks and effort estimates, and communicate software solutions effectively to internal teams and customers.

Responsibilities

• Perform full lifecycle development for embedded systems, including implementation, unit testing, integration, and formal sell-off testing.
• Review customer requirements, translate them into detailed specifications, and produce technical documentation, designs, operational concepts, and effort estimates.
• Collaborate closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration of software with electronic components, boards, and embedded hardware platforms.
• Develop and execute comprehensive test plans and procedures, perform debugging and troubleshooting, and ensure compliance with functional and performance specifications.
• Conduct design and code reviews, resolve defects, and adhere to established development processes, configuration management practices, and release procedures.
• Design, develop, maintain, and debug embedded software applications using C and Python.
• Develop and execute automated test scripts and maintain automated test environments for embedded software systems.
• Review and interpret system and software requirements, ensuring full traceability and verification of requirement compliance.
• Perform integration, verification, and validation testing on embedded hardware and software components.
• Participate in software architecture discussions, code reviews, and design evaluations to improve system performance and maintainability.
• Develop new features, enhance existing functionality, and troubleshoot software issues throughout the product lifecycle.
• Utilize instrument control and lab equipment such as single-board computers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and power supplies for hardware and software validation.
• Collaborate closely with software and hardware engineers to troubleshoot and resolve defects, performance issues, and integration challenges.
• Maintain detailed test and development documentation, including test cases, software design records, test results, and compliance reports.
• Support continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines for automated build, test, and release processes.
• Conduct formal verification activities and provide clear evidence of requirement compliance for audits and qualification efforts.
• Present development progress, test results, and technical findings to internal teams and customers in a clear and professional manner.
• Support root cause analysis of field issues and implement corrective software solutions to improve product reliability.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on software quality, reliability, maintainability, and performance.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience with both embedded software development and testing across the full lifecycle.
• Strong hands-on experience developing and debugging embedded software using C.
• Hands-on experience using Python for test automation, scripting, and tooling.
• Experience with requirements analysis, traceability, and verification activities.
• Familiarity with embedded hardware concepts, microcontrollers, and real-time systems.
• Ability to design, implement, and maintain automated test environments for embedded software.
• Solid understanding of Linux environments for development and testing.
• Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills for embedded systems and software defects.
• Ability to create clear technical documentation, test plans, and design records.
• Effective communication skills to explain technical solutions and present results to internal teams and customers.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with CI/CD tools such as Bamboo and related build and deployment pipelines.
• Experience with version control systems such as Git.
• Familiarity with communication protocols including UART, I²C, SPI, Serial RapidIO, and Ethernet.
• Familiarity with unit testing tools and frameworks for embedded software.
• Experience working in Linux environments and using shell scripting for automation and tooling.
• Familiarity with MIL-STD qualification testing and associated compliance processes.
• Understanding of manufacturing processes and electronic stress screening for hardware.
• Understanding of bare-metal programming and low-level embedded software development.
• Interest in working with equipment used in defense and military installations, with the ability to obtain appropriate clearances where required.
• Appreciation for seeing products through the entire lifecycle from initial design through manufacturing and deployment.

Work Environment

This role is primarily onsite with some flexibility, offering a mix of cubicle-based workspaces and well-equipped labs for hands-on development and testing with embedded hardware and instrumentation. You will work with technologies such as embedded C, Python, Linux, single-board computers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and power supplies in a structured engineering environment. The team follows a 9/80 work schedule, providing regular extended weekends and a balanced approach to work and personal time. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Melbourne, FL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $80.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
