    Description

Would you like to lead the team that determines the correct tax on transactions across AWS and beyond? AWS Tax Engine owns the services that compute tax worldwide - determining jurisdiction and tax treatment, calculating the correct amounts, and supporting the collection and remittance of tax across an expanding set of countries, jurisdictions, and tax regimes. These are business-critical, high-volume systems that sit directly in the billing path: they must be accurate, auditable, resilient, and continuously compliant.

The team"s charter spans three dimensions. First, AWS-liable tax, where AWS is responsible for calculating, collecting, and remitting taxes - this is about AWS business expansion and compliance, the critical core that must stay correct as AWS enters new countries and regimes. Second, non-AWS-liable tax, where AWS is not the liable party but computes tax on behalf of others - for example, third-party sellers in a marketplace - this is about customer experience, reducing friction by handling tax complexity customers would otherwise bear themselves. Third, tax engine as a service, where non-AWS tenants consume the tax engine as an externalized service - this is about going beyond AWS. Leading this team means holding these together: the compliance rigor of the first, the customer-experience focus of the second, and the flexibility and multi-tenancy of the third.

We are seeking an experienced Software Development Manager to lead the AWS Tax Engine team. You will own the architecture, development, and operations of the team"s software and services; establish its technical standards and engineering practices; and grow engineers across levels. You will balance a steady stream of regulatory-driven country launches against long-term platform investment, keep a demanding live-site operation healthy, and translate technical trade-offs into durable, scalable solutions with measurable business impact. You will partner widely - with product and program management, and with invoicing, marketplace, finance, tax planning, and compliance reporting stakeholders who rely on this team as a source of truth.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Lead and grow the team. Manage, coach, and develop the AWS Tax Engine engineering team. Hire to raise the bar, develop engineers across levels (including growing senior engineers and emerging leads), and manage performance with direct, honest feedback.
    • Own technical direction. Set the technical vision, strategy, and roadmap for the tax engine across determination, calculation, and collection/remittance support. Balance near-term regulatory commitments against the long-term health and maintainability of the platform.
    • Own operational excellence. Keep business-critical, high-volume services in the billing path healthy - availability, scalability, correctness, auditability, and resilience. Reduce operational load and strengthen operational maturity through better runbooks, automation, and durable fixes.
    • Deliver the roadmap. Plan and execute across competing demands: country and regime launches, compliance-driven changes, platform and scaling investment, and the team"s AI-native initiatives. Make clear prioritization calls and communicate trade-offs to stakeholders and leadership.
    • Serve multiple customer models. Evolve the engine to serve AWS-liable tax, non-AWS-liable scenarios that reduce customer friction by handling tax on behalf of others (e.g. third-party marketplace sellers), and external tenants consuming tax engine as a service - balancing compliance rigor with multi-tenancy and flexibility.
    • Deepen domain ownership. Build and retain deep understanding of the team"s tax determination and calculation domain, and invest in reducing single-points-of-knowledge across the team.
    • Partner across the organization. Work closely with product and program management, partner engineering teams across AWS Invoicing, marketplace, finance, tax planning, and compliance reporting stakeholders to align on requirements, sequencing, and outcomes.
    • Advance the AI-native direction. Drive agent-first operations and tooling that reduce operational toil and accelerate how the team builds, delivers, and operates.

    About the team

AWS Tax Engine sits within AWS Invoicing, as part of the Global Tax and Compliance pillar. The team owns the tax calculation services in the billing path - a space that blends deep, constantly changing tax-domain complexity with large-scale distributed systems engineering, and spans AWS business expansion and compliance, customer experience, and taking the engine beyond AWS.

The team holds a high bar for operational excellence and works in an AI-native way, while putting real weight on how people work together. It is a collaborative environment that welcomes different perspectives and invests in each other"s growth - people share ideas openly, learn from one another, and take ownership of their work, supported by mentorship and room to develop.

Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
