    Description

Are you passionate about building software that makes a meaningful difference for millions of customers? We are looking for a Software Development Manager to lead a team of talented engineers in designing, building, and operating software systems at Amazon scale. In this role, you will own the technical vision and roadmap for your team"s products, guiding your engineers through the full software lifecycle-from design and implementation to deployment and long-term maintenance. You will tackle ambiguous problems, define solutions that balance immediate needs with strategic goals, and create an environment where your team delivers high-quality, maintainable software. If you thrive on coaching engineers, shaping technical direction, and collaborating across teams to solve real customer problems, we want to hear from you.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Lead and grow a high-performing software development team, providing coaching, mentorship, and career development guidance to engineers across multiple levels while building a strong talent pipeline through effective hiring practices.
    • Own the technical strategy and 1-2 year product roadmap for your team"s software systems, defining priorities that align with organizational goals and customer needs while making transparent tradeoffs on scope, resources, and timelines.
    • Drive system design decisions across your team"s architecture, ensuring solutions meet scalability, performance, security, and maintainability requirements while reducing complexity and technical debt over time.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional partners-including product, program management, and peer engineering teams-to align on priorities, resolve dependencies, and deliver cohesive solutions that improve the customer experience.
    • Establish operational excellence practices including metrics, audit mechanisms, and quality standards that enable your team to maintain healthy systems, respond effectively to issues, and continuously improve delivery processes.

    A day in the life

You start your morning reviewing operational metrics and system health dashboards for the services your team owns. Mid-morning, you join a design review where your engineers walk through a proposed architecture, and you ask questions that sharpen the approach. After lunch, you have a one-on-one with a direct report to discuss their career goals and map out a development plan. Later, you partner with a product manager to refine upcoming priorities and evaluate tradeoffs. You close the day by reviewing a narrative document a team member drafted, providing written feedback to strengthen the proposal before a broader leadership review.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
