    Description

Managing trillions of objects, retrieving them in sub-millisecond time, deploying software to tens of thousands of hosts, and achieving 99.999999999% durability (yes, that"s 11 nines). These numbers hint at the scale of problems you"ll tackle every day on Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3). S3 powers businesses across the globe, and we are looking for a Software Development Manager to lead a team building the index layer of S3 Express, our high-performance storage tier. You will own the technical direction for your team"s distributed systems, guide engineers through algorithmically complex challenges like noisy-neighbor isolation and sub-millisecond latency, and help shape what could become the largest data storage service on the planet. If you care deeply about growing people, inventing new solutions, and operating at cloud scale, this is the role for you.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Own the technical vision and roadmap for the S3 Express NameSpace index layer, defining how the system evolves to meet customer latency and durability requirements over the next one to two years.
    • Lead a team of software engineers through the full development lifecycle, including system design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational health for distributed storage services running on tens of thousands of hosts.
    • Drive solutions to complex performance problems such as noisy-neighbor isolation and sub-millisecond retrieval, partnering closely with front-end and storage system teams to deliver cohesive results.
    • Build and develop an inclusive team of engineers by investing in coaching, career development planning, and strategic project assignments that grow future technical leaders.
    • Establish operational metrics and audit mechanisms that give your team clear visibility into system performance, customer experience, and service reliability at scale.

    A day in the life

You might start the morning reviewing latency dashboards and durability metrics for the S3 Express index layer, then join a design review where your engineers walk through a proposal for reducing tail latency. After lunch, you could be working with the front-end systems team to align on an upcoming integration, followed by a one-on-one coaching session with an engineer preparing for their next career step. You"ll move between strategic planning and hands-on technical guidance, ensuring your team has the context and support they need to ship high-quality software.

    About the team

The S3 Express NameSpace team owns the index layer that underpins Amazon S3 Express, a high-performance storage tier built for workloads that demand single-digit-millisecond access. We sit within the broader Amazon S3 organization and partner closely with front-end and storage system teams to deliver an end-to-end customer experience at massive scale. Our culture is grounded in collaboration, technical curiosity, and an inclusive environment where every engineer"s perspective makes the product better. If you want to solve problems that few teams in the industry ever encounter, we would love to hear from you.

So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
