    Description

The Amazon Optics Video team is looking for a Software Development Manager to lead the team responsible for delivering reliable, hardware-agnostic video streaming, recording, and camera management for Amazon"s security operators. This team builds the core video services that secures Amazon"s physical sites worldwide. You will own the technical direction and people leadership for a team of engineers building and operating production services that power video for over 300,000+ cameras globally.

Your team"s platform enables security operators to stream live video, record continuously, manage cameras at scale, and extract image frames on demand. The systems you lead directly protect every Amazon data center, corporate office, and AWS facility. Your customers include Data Center Security, Security Operations Centers, Contract Guard Forces, Analytics teams, and infrastructure partners.

    Key job responsibilities

Own the technical vision, architecture, and delivery roadmap for nine (9) production video services including cloud-based streaming, continuous recording, on-premises recording, camera lifecycle management, and image extraction.

Lead a team of software engineers through active projects including a global camera migration targeting 300,000+ cameras, on-premises recording production readiness, and multi-vendor camera interoperability.

    Drive cost optimization at scale.

Partner with customer groups spanning Data Center Security, Security Operations Centers, Analytics, and infrastructure teams to define requirements and deliver solutions.

Maintain on-call rotations and drive incident response for video infrastructure serving security-critical workloads across all Amazon regions.

Build and retain a high-performing engineering team. Recruit, hire, mentor, and develop engineers who deliver results without your direct involvement.

Make architecture decisions across cloud and edge computing. The team operates services spanning AWS (S3, CloudFront, ECS, EC2, Kinesis) and embedded applications running directly on camera hardware.

Drive security-first engineering practices. Security is non-negotiable for this team. Controls are baked into the architecture, and camera manufacturer and firmware versions are deliberately limited.

Reduce operational burden through automation. Every feature must reduce the number of humans required to onboard or troubleshoot a site. Zero-human onboarding is the goal.

    A day in the life

You join your team"s daily scrum to unblock engineers working on the next phase of the cloud recording migration

Prioritize and delegate work while clearing roadblocks to success.

Delegate as necessary while maintaining ownership

The team operates with five (5) core tenets: security is non-negotiable, zero-human onboarding is the goal, own the critical path one (1) path at a time, cost efficiency at scale, and customers operate while the team disappears.

Team members are distributed across the US with concentration in the DMV are, New York, and Nashville.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
