    Description

Amazon Prime Air is seeking a Software Development Manager to lead and grow the Airspace Management and Orchestration System (AMOS) software team. This is a unique opportunity to shape the system that coordinates a fleet of autonomous delivery drones, manages shared airspace, and optimizes deliveries per hour as Prime Air expands.

As the software leader for AMOS, you will own the architecture, development, and operation of scalable services that orchestrate drone missions and coordinate activity across drone and ground systems. Your team will build the capabilities to plan and sequence missions, deconflict flight paths, and allocate airspace capacity-turning advances in planning and optimization into reliable production services. You will set the technical direction and engineering standards needed to support growing fleet sizes, delivery volumes, and operating locations.

You will lead an existing team of approximately 15 software developers, developing engineering talent and growing the team to meet an expanding mission. Working closely with scientists, systems engineers, and teams across drone software, ground systems, and flight operations, you will translate complex operational requirements and scientific algorithms into services that deliver measurable improvements in throughput, reliability, and efficiency.

This role requires a leader who can dive deep into distributed systems architecture and complex planning problems while setting a clear strategy, developing a high-performing team, and driving delivery across organizational boundaries. You will balance long-term architectural investments with near-term operational needs, building a service and an organization that can scale with Prime Air.

    Key job responsibilities

Lead and grow a software development team building scalable services for fleet orchestration, mission planning, and airspace management, owning the architecture, development, and operation of highly available distributed services that scale with fleet size, delivery volume, and operating locations.

Establish service-level objectives for availability, latency, and reliability, and build observability, incident response, and operational mechanisms that sustain uptime and accelerate recovery, including service security, access controls, and secure development practices in partnership with security teams.

Drive integration with internal and external services through clear API contracts and resilient interfaces, partnering with scientists, systems engineers, and teams across drone software, ground systems, and flight operations to translate planning algorithms and operational requirements into reliable production capabilities.

Establish engineering practices for automated testing, deployment, rollback, capacity planning, and disaster recovery to enable frequent, dependable releases.

Recruit, develop, and retain engineering talent, growing technical leaders and building a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Define and track service health, delivery commitments, infrastructure costs, and operational outcomes, and set and communicate the technical strategy and roadmap, aligning leadership and partner teams on priorities, dependencies, and tradeoffs.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
