    Description

Amazon's Worldwide Deals and Promotions organization builds the systems that compute and apply promotional benefits to hundreds of millions of customer orders every day. The Promotions Calculations Lifecycle (PCL) team owns the checkout-time calculation path: deciding which promotions apply to a cart, how benefits combine, and what the customer ultimately pays - correctly, at low latency, and at worldwide scale.

We are looking for a Software Development Engineer II (SDE II) to own the design, build, and operation of services on this critical path. You will work on high-throughput, low-latency systems where correctness is customer-facing and measured in real money. This is a hands-on engineering role for a builder who enjoys deep technical ownership, solving ambiguous problems with team members, and raising the operational bar for services that must work worldwide on Day 1.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Own end to end the design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operation of components and services on the promotions calculation path, from design document through post-launch monitoring.
    • Design and build scalable, low-latency services and features that compute promotional benefits correctly at checkout for customers worldwide.
    • Raise code quality through thorough, timely code reviews, strong testing practices, and secure, maintainable, well-instrumented code.
    • Drive operational excellence - participate in on-call, reduce operational load through automation, and constructively identify and fix sources of defects and toil.
    • Collaborate across teams with partner engineering teams, product managers, and stakeholders to deliver cross-functional initiatives that span multiple months.
    • Work through ambiguity by breaking down loosely defined problems, unblocking yourself and others, and making pragmatic decisions that move the team forward.
    • Mentor and uplevel peers and newer engineers through design feedback, pairing, and knowledge sharing.

    A day in the life

A typical week combines focused building with the collaboration and operational rigor that keep a Tier-1 service healthy. You might start the day reviewing a design document for a change to how benefits combine at checkout, then pair with a teammate on the Universal Benefit Service (UBS) to reduce calculation latency on a high-traffic path. You will write and review code, add tests and metrics, and ship changes through the team's continuous deployment pipeline.

You will take part in the on-call rotation for services the team owns, using operational signals to find and remove recurring sources of defects and toil. You will work with partner teams across Worldwide Deals and Promotions, and with product managers, to turn ambiguous requirements into concrete designs. You will also invest in the people around you - giving design feedback, mentoring newer engineers, and sharing what you learn so the whole team levels up.

    About the team

The Promotions Calculations Lifecycle (PCL) team sits within Amazon's Worldwide Deals and Promotions organization. We own the checkout-time path that determines which promotions apply to a customer's cart, how those benefits combine, and the final price the customer pays. Our services run worldwide and are on the critical ordering path, so correctness, availability, and latency are first-order requirements - the systems we build directly shape both the customer experience and Amazon's financials.

We are a team of builders who value deep technical ownership, operational excellence, and raising the bar for one another. We invest in mentorship and career growth, work backwards from the customer, and take pride in making complex systems simpler and more reliable over time. You will join a group where your work is highly visible, your decisions matter, and there is ample room to grow as an engineer.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
