    Description

Are you passionate about building software systems that operate at massive scale and directly impact millions of customers? We"re looking for a Software Development Engineer III to join our team at Amazon, where you"ll lead the design and delivery of complex software solutions across the full development lifecycle. In this role, you"ll tackle problems where the technology strategy isn"t yet defined, working backwards from customer needs to architect systems that are scalable, performant, and secure. You"ll balance competing constraints, drive technical direction, and collaborate with engineers across multiple teams to deliver meaningful results. If you"re a builder who thrives on turning ambiguity into elegant, well-crafted solutions, we"d love to hear from you.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Lead the end-to-end design, implementation, and delivery of software systems spanning multiple features, from defining technical strategy through deployment and ongoing maintenance.
    • Own your team"s architectural direction, making informed trade-offs between short-term delivery needs and long-term extensibility, performance, and security.
    • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and cross-functional partners to clarify requirements, build consensus on technical approaches, and ensure successful integration across dependent systems.
    • Drive adoption of engineering best practices on your team, including code quality, operational excellence, and effective use of generative AI tools to augment productivity and software quality.
    • Coach and mentor engineers on your team and across related teams, providing guidance on system design, coding practices, and career development.

    A day in the life

You"ll start your day reviewing design documents and code reviews, providing feedback that raises the quality bar for your team. Throughout the day, you"ll move between deep technical work-writing code, prototyping solutions, and debugging complex issues-and collaborative sessions where you align with partner teams on system interfaces and integration points. You"ll also spend time identifying opportunities to simplify existing systems and proactively addressing architectural gaps before they become problems.

    About the team

Our team is focused on building software that customers rely on every day. We value collaboration, technical rigor, and a pragmatic approach to solving hard problems. You"ll work alongside talented engineers who are committed to learning from each other and pushing the boundaries of what"s possible at Amazon"s scale. We"re investing in new capabilities and looking for someone who will help shape our technical vision for the years ahead.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
