    Description

Are you passionate about building software systems that operate at massive scale and directly impact millions of customers? We are looking for a Software Development Engineer III to join our team at Amazon and help shape the technical direction of critical software systems. In this role, you will lead complex projects from concept through delivery, working across the full software lifecycle to solve problems where the business need is clear but the right technical approach is still yours to define. You will design and build solutions that balance performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability while collaborating with engineers and stakeholders across multiple teams. If you are a self-starter who thrives on turning ambiguity into well-architected systems and who enjoys mentoring others along the way, we want to hear from you.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Lead the design, implementation, and delivery of multi-engineer software projects, owning your team"s architectural direction and ensuring solutions are scalable, performant, and secure.
    • Define and drive engineering best practices across your team, including code quality standards, operational readiness, and development processes that improve productivity and reliability.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional partners - including product managers, technical program managers, and engineers on related teams - to align on requirements, resolve technical trade-offs, and deliver integrated solutions.
    • Mentor and coach engineers on your team and beyond, providing technical guidance on system design, coding practices, and career development to strengthen overall team capability.
    • Evaluate and integrate new technologies, design patterns, and generative AI tools where appropriate to simplify systems, reduce complexity, and accelerate delivery.

    A day in the life

You might start your morning reviewing a design document from a teammate, offering feedback that sharpens the approach before a broader review. By mid-morning, you are deep in code - prototyping an interface that defines the boundary between two critical components. After lunch, you join a cross-team architecture discussion to align on a shared dependency, then pivot to pair-programming with a junior engineer who is tackling a tricky edge case. Your afternoon wraps up with a quick look at operational dashboards, ensuring your services are healthy and your alarms are well-tuned.

    About the team

Our team builds software that matters to AWSs customers at a global scale. We value clear communication, pragmatic problem-solving, and an inclusive environment where every engineer"s perspective is heard. We invest in each other"s growth through mentorship, constructive code reviews, and knowledge sharing. As we look ahead, we are focused on simplifying our systems, adopting new technologies thoughtfully, and raising the bar on operational excellence. If you want to work alongside collaborative, curious engineers who care about building things the right way, this is the team for you.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
