    Description

Are you excited about building software that impacts millions of customers? Do you enjoy solving complex technical problems while collaborating with a talented team of engineers? We"re looking for a Software Development Engineer II to join Amazon and help design, build, and operate systems that matter at scale.

In this role, you will contribute across the full software development lifecycle-from understanding customer needs and defining solutions to implementing, testing, deploying, and operating production software. You will tackle challenging problems where the business context is clear but the path forward requires creative, well-reasoned design. You will write high-quality, maintainable code and help raise the bar for your team through mentorship and thoughtful code reviews. If you are a self-starter who thrives on turning ambiguity into clarity and delivering meaningful results, we"d love to hear from you.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Design and implement software solutions for major features and improvements, applying sound system design principles that account for scalability, maintainability, and performance.
    • Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable code using optimal data structures and algorithms, and actively participate in code reviews to provide constructive feedback to teammates.
    • Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, and cross-functional peers to understand business requirements and deliver solutions that balance customer needs with technical considerations.
    • Identify and resolve root causes of operational issues, driving permanent fixes and continuously improving your team"s operational health and processes.
    • Mentor and coach fellow engineers, train new team members on system architecture and operations, and contribute to clear technical documentation that supports long-term team knowledge.

    A day in the life

Your day begins by reviewing operational metrics and addressing any alerts from the systems you own. You then join your team"s standup to align on priorities before diving into design or implementation work. You might spend the morning writing code for a new feature, then shift to reviewing a teammate"s pull request in the afternoon-offering feedback that helps them grow. You regularly collaborate with product and engineering partners to refine requirements, and you evaluate opportunities to integrate generative AI tools where they can improve productivity.

    About the team

Our team is focused on building reliable, scalable software that directly improves the customer experience at Amazon. We value collaboration, continuous learning, and a commitment to operational excellence. Every engineer on the team has the opportunity to influence technical direction and contribute to meaningful projects.

We are building for the long term, investing in systems that are extensible and well-documented so they can evolve as customer needs change. If you"re looking for an inclusive environment where your ideas are heard and your growth is supported, this is the team for you.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
